.223 model 12 load

Just picked up a model 12 in good condition and chambered (not factory) in .223. The seller does not have a reamer print and I believe it is a 9 twist. I am looking to use it as a woodchuck gun in the summer and help out the farmers that allow me to hunt deer/coyotes. Any bullet recommendations or loads to try? I have a variety of powders and current bullets in 22 are most heavy 77-85 grain.

I have several 223 Rem bolt rifle in twists ranging from 12 to 8". I hunt a lot of groundhogs in the spring and summer.

I've used Nosler 50 and 55 BTs for many years in my 12" twist rifles. My 9" twist rifle shoot tighter with 55 BTs. If you can't find them, the 55 Vmax's are very good also.

The 60 Vmax shoot outstanding in my 8" twist rifles. I haven't tried them in my 9" twist rifle, but I can't see any reason why they shouldn't work.

I have a 12fv with factory barrel 1:9 twist. Mine likes 73 eldm with varget. It also likes 55gr fmj with h335

I think the 60vmax will do you just fine. My 1/9’s love them, they are solid out to 300 yards but then they start to open up a little.

Sierra 52 gn BTHP Match have always been great shooters for me in a few rifles. Easy to tune and don't care what twist you have. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative, Speer 50gn TNT's and Midway's Dogtown's shoot way better than one would expect from such a cheap bullet.

Edit. Wanted to add, a good friend of mine just watched his daughter take her first buck with a well-placed 69 gn Sierra Matchking to the vitals and stopped it in only 20 yards from a 2-2-3. Complete pass through. Not an ideal deer bullet per say but it did what it needed to do.

I have a Sav. M 12 in 223. It will shoot the 50 to 60 Varmint bullets extremely well. Recommend a heavier bullet for dear. Have fun shooting the rifle.

Savage 110 FP in 223 with 1:9, here.

The 52gr Sierras work well at shorter distances. I'm using W748 with those.
For longer range varmints, the 69gr MatchKings & 70gr Nosler RDF work well.
I'm running Alliant PP2000MR with those.

IF you can find them Nosler makes a 60gr Partition.
Otherwise the Ballistic Tip (hunting, not varmint!) is a go to bullet for deer!

Factory 1/9 barrel loves 69gr Nosler CC over 25gr Varget all the way to 600yds

My .223 Savage loves the 60 grn Vmax ( W748) and the 53 Grn Vmax. (H322). Both are deadly .

1. Shooting a Model10 with 69gr RMR and TAC Powder
2. Model 11 refitted with Model12 Varmint barrel with Sierra MK 69gr., A2460

Both barrels are 1:9 them M10 is 22" and the M12 is 26".. 62gr Hornady FMJ shoot very well but not as well as the 69gr.

have been shooting and reloading for .223 for about 40 years 69 gr - 75 gr I use varget w748 reloader15 my 1-8 shot varget and W-748 the best good luck
