223 loads inconsistent, any idea why???

Hello,

I have two loads made up for my Savage 223 that shoot very well, 1- 26grs of H4895 55gr V-Max CCI primer. 2- 27.5grs of Varget 50gr V-Max CCI primer. Both loads in Win brass. Both loads are .5-.625moa at 200yrds. BUT, I can get 3-4 groups of 5 working great then out of the blue the next group of 5 will be opened up to around 2.5" give or take. But it may only be one group of 5 that opens up. I also will add, all brass has been loaded the same amount of time and it doesn't seem to matter if it's once or 3-4 times, I'm trying to keep the seating tension all consistent too, but they are loaded and shot on different days with weather being much the same and not changing ANYTHING during loading. Any ideas why????

are the action screws all tightened down with the same amount of torque? i can't remember the company's name--they specialize in savage rifles--but give them a call. look around for them on the net, or just wait until someone else posts the name of the place.

I could be reading this wrong, but your message seems to imply that the last group opens up. If that is the case, you could be getting some copper fouling after a certain number of rounds, reducing your accuracy. Does cleaning the bore and removing the copper fouling restore accuracy?

OK this is what I get from reading your post.the first 3-4 lots of five give you great groups with the loads you have given.but the last lot of five gives you a bad group.now if this is all done on a clean barrel then it sounds to me the barrel is getting alot of fouling in it then the group goes down hell after the first 20 rounds.

just does not seem to me that the action screws are lose if you are getting great groups with the first 20 rounds.but I have been wrong.I do not have a Savage all of mine are remingtons.so I hope one of us is able to help you out.just seems to me more of a fouling thing to me.

When I have encountered this type of experience I found that my shooting technique needed work.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys,

No I'm not saying it's the last group, it can just happen at random. It can be the first group, the middle group or the last doesn't really matter, one group of 5 will just open up??
As for cleaning, it doesn't seem to matter that gun seems to shoot the same, with slightly favouring a dirty barrel.

question Kevin.is it the same 5 pcs of brass?or it might be that you need to check the scale after a few rounds have been charged.just keep use posted we will fix this.or I hope too.

Not the same brass, it can be any five pcs. I check my scale after every five loads because thats what I thought it was as well??

Thanks.

Kevin.

kevin,
.001 or .002 of powder wouldn't make that kind of difference. A couple of sugestions, # ea. pc. of brass keep trac of them for the next few times out,if you see a pattern you can fix it.If you still have the problem have somone you know that can shoot, don't tell him of the problem and have him shoot all the groups, see if it still exists,if it does then you need to look into a problem w/gun or shooting rests. hope this helps.

When the groups open up, is it just a round or two that open the group, or are all the shots having a different point of impact?

Just a thought, but maybe if say the third shot goes wide, and the following two do the same as well, maybe you are getting frustrated by the first flier and overcompensating or trying too hard on the shots following the flier and having some self induced accuracy issues?
It's not to say you are a bad shot, but only that you are striving for excellence and get frustrated by throwing a shot and stress over the next couple a bit too much causing your grip to tighten or position to change? It doesn't take much of a change in technique to cause a shot to go wide, and stress makes it that much harder to be perfectly consistent.

It's just a thought and not meant to insult in any way. Maybe try taking a breather if you do get aggravated by a flier, and then go back once you're relaxed? It may help.

I have a similar problem, in that once I blow a good group I get mad and can't shoot for beans until I calm down a bit.

Sometimes it's the simplest things that cause inaccuracy or shots to land off mark. Occasionally, all it takes is a minute to get relaxed to bring back the accuracy.

Man there's Truth to That ! :D

I can be my worst enemy sometimes,, Esp on a Make or Brake Shot !! I can do a really good job on psyching myself out,, ::)
Just gotta back off an breath, maybe chant a few mantra's

Sounds to me like shooter era. It happens to the best. You can grip the rifle a little different or just not do EVERYTHING the same each time and cause groups to open up. If they all went into the same hole all the time it would not be any fun. ;D
