223 info for LR shooting

Dennis,

Are you uniforming the primer pockets, I presume that you do sir. Do you ream your flash holes? Might want to try that, it helped me! Also, I turn the Lapua necks where they are sized with a .250bushing and then run back over a K&M expander, this way with the Berger 90VLD's, I was getting .001 tension. This greatly reduced my verticle dispersion. Even on Lapua brass, I still run the flash hole uniformer to just clean up the inside of the flash hole and I do it after I ream the flash holes..

Randy,
Yep, aside from neck turning, I've always done those steps, even for over seven thousand LC 5.56 I bought years ago, when I was still shooting an AR SR XTC. And out of curiousity, I neck turned a bunch of LC & WW brass for 600yd. ammo, just for my own peace of mind. Never did any real scientific testing to compare the NT to un-turned ammo, but shot some good scores with the NT stuff. Was younger & dumber back then, and thought I had the time to do all that stuff.

That was also before I started doing my own barreling work, and was shooting just a few rifles. Now I'm so scattered, with tubeguns, various LR prone rifles, several A5-stocked tactical rifles, and the DTA SRS with 6x47 & 284 bbls - I have a hard time focusing on one project long enough to get meaningful results.

i have reduced myslef Dennis to just three rifles.. and they are all the same cal bore.. same twist.. same length.. just one of them is going to be a 22BR the others 223, which will be easier to keep up with.. I am going to try LC brass this coming season with the 223, so far test have proven to be very good.

Flatlander, thanks for the info. I know my smith has several 223 reamers ... dont know if he has a 223 match. If I order a 223 match reamer ... which one? solid pilot, removable pilot? I could ask my smith I guess. When I get back from my hunt and get through Christmas, I'll get my barrel ordered and reamer ... if needed. I think I am gonna order Lapua brass ... I have a bunch of Win 223, but may build a 6x45 AI on another rifle and use it for that. Gary

I had very good luck with the 90s in a .223, so has Froggy. I had such good results, I took it a step further...

For the .223, I use a .223 Holliger reamer that has about .090" more freebore than a Wylde in order to accomodate the 90 gr bullet length. I was worried about the additional freebore screwing up the 77 gr mag length and 80 gr loads, but they both shot like they had eyes.
