.223, h4895, ........ primer question added...

hey guys.

i started reloading some new rounds for my new AR-15. i got some 68 grn. hornady HPBT match bullets and and loading them in fornt of 25.2 grns of H4895. i have hornady new dimension dies and when i load them to 2.255", its leaving a ring around the canalure area of the bullet. will this devistate my accuracy??

does this load sound okay? i have a white oak armament 18", SPR SS MATCH barrel with a WYLDE chamber and 1/7 twist.

i also loaded up some 60 grn v-max bullets with the same powder load. same ring was left on the v-max bullets as well... being memorial weekend, there is no one at customer service, pluse i trust your guys' judgement before theres.

thasnk guys, and if you think you have a better formula, let me know,

thanks brian

I get that with a compressed load.. you can get it with hard seating due to a tight neck,ie, sized tight). Didn't hurt my accuracy.

I frequently had rings when I was using a standard expander ball; it was ~0.002" under bullet diameter, so seating really included doing some neck expansion. Bullets are much softer than expanders and don't like to be used as such. I now use expanders that are bullet diameter; that gives ~0.0015" neck tension and maximizes bullet pull. Now I no longer see marks from the seater stem on bullets. You can order custom diameter expanders from Hornady, and the prices can be found in the catalog, either print or on-line). It takes a few weeks lead time depending on the production schedule.

heres another question. i am loading these loads for accuracy testing in my AR-15. i am using Winchester primers. i here that these might be to soft for the use in AR's... is this true??

I've gotten the best accuracy and lowest SD/ES from WSR primers,WW or LC brass, RL-15 or N-550, 75 gr Hornady BTHP or A-Max), but they are a bit softer than the Remington 7-1/2 or CCI-41; however, they will handle a full-power load and then some. It's only an issue if you go WAY over the top on pressure. The WSR is my preferred primer for .223 loads.

Did you work up to that load? If not, start over.

I use CCI 450 primers. Chrono says that provides the most consistent loads.

If new brass, size the necks with a FL or neck sizing die. Will help make them round.

Good luck!!!

is varget and h4895 to slow for an 18" barrel??

i am also having a hard time finding info on loads using 68 grn hornady match HPBT's. is it okay to use sierras laods for the 69 " HPBT's? thanks brian.
