223 Ftr Bullet

The velo at target and SD for these 88’s were much better than I expected.

An over book charge of IMR 8208XBR. All the usual disclaimers as to safe reloading and risk assumption with this data. I was at 24.5 gr, jumping 0.010". LC brass 4x fired and Fed 205MAR primers. Work up until you get pressure signs. This was in a 26" gas gun with a +2 gas system. No swipes on the brass but the primers are starting to show some flatness. I will likely back off some as it warms up this summer.
Just got some 8208 for the first time. Liking it quite a bit so far. Looks like its going to be my go to 77 smk gas gun powder.

I love 8208 XBR for 77gr loads, it also performs well with 62gr bullets. CCI41 primers work well consistently, but FED AR Match primers really pair the best with that powder.

As luck would have it I just scored a brick of FGM AR primers, am using 41s now. I have never tried federal primers before. How would you compare the two?

Well... Just found 90smk at Blue Collar and have them on the way! Since I have a good load for 90vld I will evaluate tweaking the charge weight and optimize seating depth. Anybody have a ballpark on how much these like to jump?

Charlie, I have 500 Berger 90grain 22cal bullets on my bench. I’ll never use them. Do you want to buy them?

I would say without hesitation: Federal Gold Medal AR primer cup material is softer in comparison with CCI. I use a 21st century hand priming tool with Lake City 5.56 brass for loading and shooting my 223 wylde and 5.56 ARs. I usually have to deprime one or two FED GM AR primers from the LC cases per 100 due to heavily deformed primer cups, even though I ream out the crimped primer pockets. When using Lapua 223 match brass, I do not get any deformed primer cups.

As far as standard deviations and results go, I have found that roughly 9/10 times the FED GM AR primer will produce lower SDs and group tighter with extruded powders compared to CCI primers. CCI 41s work very well for me though, and I rarely have any issues seating them so I still use them alot for hand loading ammo. Ball powders seem to burn the best using CCI41 primers in my experience.

When looking at velocity comparison between the FED GM AR primer and CCI41, I generally see an increase of 50fps with CCI41 over FED GM AR primers when using the same charge weight.

When it comes to using small rifle primers in 6mm and 6.5mm Creedmoor cases (bolt action firearms), I always go with CCI 450s as they have had the best, consistent performance in my experience.

In my 2x 308 Winchester chambered rifles, FGMM 210M primers work the best with Varget out of all the other large rifle primers I have tested (CCI, S&B, WIN). Same goes for LRP brass in 6.5 Creedmoor using H4350.
