223 Case Prep ?'s

bigedp51,

I've tried Hornady 2267's and they shoot good with just less than 1" groups at 100yds and also using IMR 4064. The AR I am getting this with is the BCM Jack Carbine with a Burris scope. Now at 600 yards I can stay in the 8's unless it's windy but then I'm using Nosler 77gr #53064 bullets.

Here's a pic of the Hornady group at 100yds.

Dear Thumb

I hated you for your 1/2 inch groups and now you tell us your AR15 retails for $2,195 and now I really hope you die with your balls under a BIG rock. >:(

I traded a few milsurp rifles for my DPMS A2 HBAR and paid out a whopping $10.57 to get my first AR15 rifle.
(yes Boyd Allen they were Enfield rifles and a noisy magot Mosin) ::)

I wanted to buy a better AR15 rifle but my finance minster said we were saving for a Caribbean cruise.

So all I got was a sweaty beer mug and a crummy hat. :(

P.S. Did I tell you that I hate you and "MY" wife should have you under her "thumb".
(so many guns to buy and so little money) sob, hic, sniffle. :'(

I'm sorry you feel that way bigedp51 but maybe telling you I got it for only $1995 might make it a bit better but not alot. ;D

Maybe I married the right woman because she told me I could buy it if I built her one, she now has a Jack like AR also but not as much $$$$$. Oh, I have to take her on an Alaskan fishing trip. Not a bad deal.. I think?

For you uninformed bolt action type shooters here in our forum a BCM AR15 is the Cadillac, Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Lexus, Range Rover of the AR15 world and are made to the highest quality standards and use the highest quality materials.

My DPMS AR15 is a Ford and assembled in Mexico. >:(

This is why at my age, with my DPMS AR15 and my failing eyesight in our end of the world survival group I'm the designated person to give covering fire in Zombie attacks. This will allow the others to escape, and I will be the first old fart bitten by the Zombies and the group doesn't have to worry about recovering my AR15 rifle or feeding me again.

I don't feel too bad about this because I can do several 30 round ammo dumps with my DPMS faster than Boyd Allen can do with his cheap bolt action rifles. ;D

Bazinga No. 2 :)

Hey bigedp51, did you use this to do that? That's what I used for the group at 100....inches! ;D

This is my AR15 at 100 yards and I don't trim the cases but once and only bump the shoulder back .002 and squeeze the neck .003. And of course I pulled the 5th shot.

That load gets me about 1/2" 10 round groups at 200 yds.

1/2" 10 round groups at 200 yards?? From an AR??

Then don't listen to ANYBODY and don't change a thing... you cannot get better than that.

Holy crap - missed that.
Yeah, I wouldn't touch a thing if that's true - 1/4MOA from an AR?
I do have some doubts, though.. ;D

Don't listen to them, keep going till you get consistent 1/4" groups. Most of the Les Baers at my range are doing that but there is a DPMS shooting sub-1/2 MOA. I've had good luck with 50gr Zombies w/ H322 or Benchmark and 75gr hornady HPBT (w/ varget, R15 or N135). The lighter bullets are easier to get tight groups at 100 yards. 69gr SMK (or similar) might give be all around out to 300 yards. My 600 yard recipe is 80gr SMK or Berger 75gr VLD. Haven't had much luck with heavier Amax, haven't tried TMK yet.

It takes a lot of work to get a gas .223 to shoot tight. I start by looking for vertical spread to find a good charge. Then adjust seating, then cull brass (throwing out the flyer brass) and cull some more.

There are 4 ARs competing in our monthly benchrest match and its growing. Benchrest IMO is 75% hand loading skill and 25% wind reading. I found Zediker publishing to be an excellent resource.

BTW, ditch those cannelures. I've never had any luck with them. You want smooth seating and as consistent neck tension as possible. 52gr is a good weight though. Zediker recommends the 52gr Hornady HPBT in his completion hand loads book. I have a batch of them but haven't tried them yet. I imagine they're pretty similar to the 50gr Zmac.

Oh also, if you're shooting in a rest try shouldering tight vs free recoil to see which works best for you. I use EWC bag riders front and back with a bald eagle rest when shooting bench. My 24" Kreiger has a 1:8 twist, Gieselle trigger and some David Tubbs components. I'm shooting consist sub 1/2 MOA and scoring low 90's per target. Best AR is shooting 98 averages 200/300 yard standard BR target.

I bought those bullets for just plinking but they are working great. I'm really not into competition shooting for accuracy but still want the best group I can get. My rest is just a Caldwell plastic one which is OK for zeroing but nowhere near what the BR people use.

I did load up some of those X-Treme bullets with the cannelure pressed in halfway and although it was raining when I went to the range I did shoot and hit some broken clays that were on the 100 yard backstop and that was using my red dot sight so I think they'll be just fine
