223 AR, newly built, fires, will not eject?

Yep the devil is in the little details. I built my second complete AR this past Saturday. I used an Oden Works DMR 18" 223 W 8" twist barrel with their supplied "tunable gas block". I used a STNGR Hawk handguard. After installing I noticed that the gas block touched the inside of the handguard slightly on one side and really close on the other side. I broke out the dremel tool with my flex wand and ground on the inside of the handguard and now it is truly free floated. That made me think, I really did not do a check for this on my first build I did a couple months ago that used the same make barrel and gas block and handguard. It is a 6.5 Grendel and I have shot it some and with handloads it shoots sub MOA but BINGO the gas block was touching the handguard slightly. I pulled it off and ground it for good clearance and I will also shoot it along with the 223 tomorrow. Maybe they both will shoot as my buddie says "half a bullet hole size group" LOL.

I am guessing the chamber could be moved to the bottom of your list of concerns. I realize Krieger could mess up a chamber, but it’s least likely of every thing you mentioned. Have you verified your buffer and buffer spring are functioning correctly?

You can check if your gas port/tube is clogged by plugging the chamber with a foam ear plug and blowing through the other end. Of course, the assumption is that anything you try will be done safely with an unloaded rifle.

You can determine if your gas block is correctly aligned if the gas tube is in perfect line with the barrel extension pin (12 noon on an assembled upper).

The AR is a simple weapon and you should have little trouble determining the source of your problem.

Please be careful and exercise sound gun safety and good luck.

Gerald

Did you assemble the rifle?

Did this check using canned air from end of bbl - plugged w bit of foam foam there for tight fit & chamber plugged w foam plug. Air clearly coming out of gas tube in upper. great block alignment check tip.

What happened?

Sheared off the locator pin. I didn't think about the fact that when you are tightening the barrel nut, holding the barrel extension, the only thing to resist the torsional force on the upper is the index pin. It sheared around 35 ft. lbs. And yes, everything was properly lubed.

When I called WOA to ask if they could help me, the person on the phone said with conviction, don't use a reaction rod when tightening the barrel nut. Further searches revealed the same.

It is fine for holding the barrel/upper when installing you gas glock and the muzzle device, but not for tightening the barrel nut.
