223 AI

Just curious about the .223AI, if anyone has somme good info & facts on this. How does this compare in reality to the 22.250?

Thanx

Been shooting a 223 AI for a while. It gets within a couple hundred feet of the 22-250 with less powder. I liked it so much I bought my own reamer for it. I am using the Redding FL "S" die and a Wilson seater my gunsmith reamed for me.

That is what I have, a 22-250... When it goes for a new barrel I was looking around for another caliber, something else had been discussed earlier, like the 250 Savage, 6-22-250 etc...
Just depends on how windy it is. The 22's don't seem to do real well where I live. Drift alot but with the heavy's and a fast twist barrel maybe they would do much better?

I just read where some guy shot his .223 AI at 600 yrds to hit his varmint. Much more than I would ever try but impressive huh?
Brass is much more available and less expensive too.

LC sportsman you should go to VarmintAls website, he is also a Californian. He is very well respected and knowledgeable. He has a ton of good info about the 223 AI and from what he says on his site is a big fan of this cartridge.

Good luck.

Why not do a 22BR? It is less overbore than a 22-250, and good brass is available. I shoot an 8 twist with 75 Amax's and 80 Bergers. My 223AI will shoot 52gr Sierras to 3500fps plus, but recently moved down a node to 3250 as I was cratering primers, and puncturing a few at the hotter load. Both loads though shoot sub .25 MOA. It would be easier for you to stay in a .473 head for that rifle though, and the 22BR fits the bill. BTW, I get just over 3000fps with the 75gr Amax's, but have pushed them to 3250fps in the BR, but found cratering and puncturing too common. At 3040, I can use the same load when it gets hot out, and it's fast enough for me. My buddy shoots the 250 Savage and 6x22-250. Both shoot great, but the 6x22-250 is showing serious erosion already after 4-500 rounds. The 250 Savage will last a long time though it's ballistics are nothing great.

My 223AI gets ~2950 out of a 27" 8 twist pre-fitted Pac-Nor barrel on my Savage, using N140 and 75 grain AMax bullets. I have made hits out to ~600 yards on prairie dogs, and it groups in the 2's at 100. Got the 50 grainers going as fast as 3500, but never worked up a good load as I was set on the 75 grain AMax as the bullet for the rifle.

3600 with a 52 A max.....3500 w/55 Nosler BT.......all on 27.5/Benchmark in a 12 twist Pac Nor 26" bbl.....p/dogs out to 700 yds.....the only way to shoot a 223 is Improved ! Mine is a 15# s/shot Savage....
