222s, show yours

My little Trip2 shot a real nice group the other day.
It's that 80y/o thin barrel, unbedded trusty old Sako Rihiimaki model. I gave the 55 NBTs a go and it seems to shootem well, with a 14twist! They shot okay-ish in the past but went over to 50gr Vmaxe that did way better.. But I ran out... So decided to give them a go again. Also shot Gongs out to 300yds with good success. What was the original rifle chambered in?

What was the original rifle chambered in?
It is still 100% original. My dad and I bought it out of an deceased estate when I was 16. It didn't shoot much for most of its life. I've probably put close to 2k rounds down the barrel ever since and it's still shooting tight.

Regards
Frans

OK, the 80 year thing had me confused since the round didn't come out until 1950.

Yes I also can't guarantee that to be the exact age but I remember it to be in that region if one dates it back via serial number and production date. But then I surely must have made a mathematical mistake. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll check it again.

#Edit# Checked it again and carefully pinned it down to be from around 1955 to 1956 that makes it at least 60 years old not 80 sorry about that.
It is from the L46 series that were manufactured from 1946 to 1962 that's 16 years of production and serials from 1 to 57000. Taking serial number 32### into account and 222Rem as a cartridge introduction in 1950 it should be pretty much halfway between 1950 and 1962.

^^^^ The best part of all of this is that, regardless of how old it is, it's something that you got with your dad. No one can ever take that away. Great provenance.

Here is my Ruger No. 1 V in 222 Rem. I bought it as a 1A in 222 but was not impressed. Then I had it converted with a 1V Stock, a Shilen barrel and a Jard 1.75 Lb. trigger. Now it is wonderfully accurate. Off a benchrest/bag setup with a Weaver T-36 it shoots in the twos and low threes at 100 yards.Ruger 1V 222 Rem Shilen Barrel.jpgRuger 1V 222 Rem Sized.jpg

Here is my one off 222 Rem. built by Russ Haydon for me: BAT action/Krieger barrel/Jewell trigger/Kelbly FBHC Stock. This one shot in the low 2s with a very few rounds fired. I knew it could shoot in the ones but decided to sell it, along with most of my BR gear two years ago, when I thought I was through with shooting. Dscn1530.jpgscan0001.jpg

I sold this Sako 4 years ago with the agreement that if he ever sold it I would get first opportunity at the same price I gave him, so now I own it again and couldn’t be happier.

Kind of funny looking back at the old 60's reloading manuals comparing the 222 and 223.
223 would never match the accuracy, popularity of the triple duce... :D
Owned a Savage 340 222 briefly but later sold it for a new 700 BDL varmint 22-250...$379

Nice rifles guys!

@nakneker , did you get your match bullets? I told the gentleman I needed something geared towards hunting...
I did, thanks for checking. I wanted you to have first opportunity since it was your thread. Did you find what you were looking for? Thanks again, Wild Willy Was awesome too, should be fun.

Sure did. Another member posted ~300 Sierra 50gr flat base soft points. Almost exactly what I was looking for. Unless they turn out to be medium velocity; then they're exactly what I was looking for.

Here's my 222. I started searching for an older 700 chambered in 222 about 4 years ago, then soon thereafter stumbled upon this old 722 action & won it for 300$. I had the action micro slicked right away since the blueing was all but gone on it. I then sourced a bartlein 13tw varmint contour barrel, Timney Calvin elite trigger (2lbs) and had it built. I initially had the barreled action in an HS precision stock but was having some feeding issues with the blind mag setup as well as some carry issues so I put it in an element chassis and it's turned into a well-oiled machine. It loves 21.2 gns of H4198 and Nosler 53 varmageddons as well as Berger 52s. It'll shoot in the 2s and 3s all day at 100 yds and a little over an inch at 200 on bad days. I really love this little franken-rifle. It might seem sacrilege to the 222 purists but its super versatile.

No pics handy but the one that got me hooked was a Contender, Super 14 with a 4x Leupold. REALLY opened my eyes to what a well-designed round is capable of when nicely paired with a capable firearm. Countless bets won when that setup would outshoot fellow shooters with rifles.

While you can never go wrong with H322 or 4198 with a 52gr match bullet, one of my favorite loads is 40gr Vmax or Ballistic Tip in front of 2400 powder. Found it in some old published data and it's a hoot.

Anyone else try 2400 powder in the triple deuce?

Never tried 2400, I’m intrigued. If I ever see some I’ll try it. Thanks.

What is micro slicked and how is it holding up.
Can that be applied to a complete rifle.

Not mine but I just refinished this old Savage 34b in 222 for a client of mine. This is his wifes rifle that was given to her by her grandfather. I wish I took some before pictures as this thing came in the door in pretty rough shape. The stock had plenty of scratches and dings and the metal was pretty much bare with most of the bluing wore off. I sanded the stock down and fit a Pachmayer pad, applied some bone black to fill the pores and give that plain walnut a little life and finished with about 50 coats of pro-custom stock finish from Brownells. Refinished the metal with midnight blue Cerakote. I thought it turned out pretty good.

That looks fantastic, nice job!

First is a Rem 700 built by Ken Kleinendorst it’s obvious but the rifle is far better than I am. The second is my Anschutz 1740D McMillan stock Leupold HD5 scope. Sitting on top of a 250lbs bore hog that never took a step. Can’t go wrong with a deuce in my opinion.
