222s, show yours

Some great looking rifles, gotta love the triple deuce. Dont do pics ,but have a Sako 222 stainless barrel and action, with the laminated stock. Shoots clover leafs with Win 748 and the 50 grain Barnes blue coated pills. Shot a crow at 305 yards off the hood of my jeep across one of my fields. Was sighted in for 200 yards, held over a little too much ,hit him in the neck just below his head. I have many boxes of 40 grain Nosler BTS , that shot great in my 22-250 Parker Hale. Hoping they shoot as well in my 222. Should be able to match 22-250 55grain pills trajectory and velocity with less boom and recoil.

Hey Tom, before I went to the 40 grain Noslers in my 22-250 for flatter trajectory , I went thru many boxes of Speer 55 grain soft points. They were super accurate, cheap as you say, and made beautiful feather clouds with crows.

I think I have 5 222’s. Recently picked up two Howa mini’s in 222 for a very good price, also have an old 600 Mowhawk, an H&R Ultra Wildcat (Sako action), and a REM 700 Classic in 222. Have a Krico dst rifle in 222 REM Mag too.
I'm totally jealous of the mowhawk, thay would be a fun one to have. The howa mini's are pretty nice too.

What a cool thread. I haven’t posted in a long time but couldn’t resist keeping this thread moving. These are all a bit obscure. Savage Series J, Sako 75 Varmint, and a Tikka Master Sporter factory 222. Had a 700 classic and ADL too and never should have sold them. Every 222 I’ve ever loaded for shoots the same load of H4198 and a 40 V Max extremely well, with minor COL adjustments only between rifles.

Wow, some great looking guns. Gotta love the .222. Here is my '79 BDL with the original Leupold VariXIIc 3-9 Fine Duplex it had on the day I bought it (used). This combination ran me $300 or $350, back when I was still in high school. It has taken literally thousands of critters - primarily ground-hogs. But then this year I put a dual extension EGW rail and a Bering Optics Super Hogster with external battery pack on it.

Just love that Master Sporter! When I was young I hoped that someday I have Master Sporter. Those are so difficult to get, I have only seen couple of those for sale and price has been something like 1200-1500€.

Thank you very much. This is the only one I’ve ever seen in 222. I wish more of the 595’s chambered in 222 would have made it across the pond back in the day.

Here's my pair of Triple Deuces. Top: Dakota Varminter; bottom Cooper Custom Classic.

The Dakota has 10-twist Douglas barrel and a Jewell trigger. The Cooper has a 12-twist barrel, and the trigger has been adjusted down to about 12 oz.

Both as yet unfired--waiting for spring. I have some Bart's and Watson 52-gr. FB bullets. Any suggestions as to the best powders in the Deuce for best accuracy?

H322, H4198, or IMR4198. Hodgdon tech guys swear by H322. Others like H335, I have not used it. Remington custom shop used to use 4895 for accuracy testing. .222’s usually shoot so well you will be challenged to tell which! Beautiful rifles. Good luck.
Peter.

That Tikka is gorgeous, cool factor of 10. Only one I’ve seen in 222, there’s a nice looking 223 on Gunbroker right now, if it was a 222 it wouldn’t be on gunbroker anymore. Nice group of rifles.

Thank you for the compliments. I haven’t seen a 222 on this thread I wouldn’t be proud to own! In my opinion, only a 221 Fireball rivals the classic 222 in cool factor. With that being said, a simple 20-222 turns a triple deuce into a whole other beast! Wonderful, simple necked down wildcat.

Here’s one I had made for my wife’s calling gun. It’s built on an old 700, douglas air gauged 18“ barrel, HS Precision stock. It’s taken quite a few critters. We’re headed out in the morning for a four day calling trip, gonna see some new country. She’ll be using this one, I’ll be using one of the Sakos.

My little Trip2 shot a real nice group the other day.
It's that 80y/o thin barrel, unbedded trusty old Sako Rihiimaki model. I gave the 55 NBTs a go and it seems to shootem well, with a 14twist! They shot okay-ish in the past but went over to 50gr Vmaxe that did way better.. But I ran out... So decided to give them a go again. Also shot Gongs out to 300yds with good success. 20201227_211340.jpg

My Trip2 is an old model Sako. It says Riihimaki on the side of the receiver. Tried dating it back via serial number and it seems to be about 80 years old. We bought it out of an deceased estate.

It's great fun to shoot and it's always in the truck on the farm. Great for Varminting and I also sometimes shoot antelope for meat in the house. A 50gr Vmax to the noggin switches the lights off nicely.

Few mods like a suppressor and Boltknob makes shooting it an absolute pleasure. Topped of with a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x with the Varmint Hunters Reticle which makes shots out to 300yds a breeze, provided the wind is calm.

A friend of mine's son shot this Red Hartebees Bull with a perfect head shot @ about 170yds. Potent little calibre if one stays within effective range.

Running 50gr Vmax @ 3250fps and it's a 3/4 MOA gun any day of the week. For a 80y/o gun that's not even bedded that's very acceptable in my opinion.

Cheers from South Africa

Regards
Frans

That friends son must have had a decent coach growing up ;)
