I have had two, and I don't think it is worth it. There is the cost of the dies (you can run the reamer in the Forster seater (I don't know about the Redding)... but the sizer is very hard, so you will need a new one.
The improvement in velocity is not worth the cost... and I have never had problems with .222, .223, and .222 Magnum case life.
Catshooter is right on,
however if you are bent on playing with the 222, consider the round that really worked and was used in the 60-70' br comp.
a 222 1/2 made by taking 222m brass and putting a 222 neck/shoulder on it, the result was very good.
204 brass opened up to 222, then run into a chamber with a 222 neck/shoulder no other change. the result is greater powder capacity with the longer neck of the222. velocity was very close to the 222m and accurcy = to the 222.
I've really enjoyed shooting my 223 AI. I went into the project not expecting significant increases in velocity; but since I do my own barreling work, felt it was worth it just to find out what advantages the Ackley treatment would have over the std. 223. Biggest advantage IMHO is probably never having to trim cases again.
I used a 26" Krieger 1:7tw sendero contour blank for the AI, and have been able to shoot several 5" groups at 1000yds with Berger 90VLDs with a MV of just over 2800fps with it. What's not to like?
I say it is definitely worth it. Have been using one for prairie dogs for 10 years or so. VV133 and a 50g Vmax is the load I shoot. Took one trip out to form brass on the dogs. No more trimming and more FPS.
