222 Remington bullet seating

Does the little 222 Remington like a jump or does it like to be seated close to the lands.I'm going to try the Berger 55 Grain MEF.

Baily: I 've been working w/ the 222 for several yrs. now/ great little ctg. A Rem. Classic 700BDL factory and a Sako Vixen w/ a Hart bbl, both w/ 14 twist bbls. As such I can't get reliable good groups with bullet weights much over 50 grs. The 50 gr. V-Max is an outstanding consistant performer in both rifles, loaded with the Hodgden recommended load of 22.2 grs. of H322. Both rifles demand a "jump" of .020". I know this to be true, since recently made a "mistake" and loaded them to touch, could not understand why groups doubled in size. Discovered what I'd done, went back with same load at .020" off and group sizes returned to usual 1/2 moa/ 5 shots at 200 yd. Am using Lapua with Fed 205 primers. Hope this helps, the 222 is high on my list of favorites.

My Grandpa said that he always set them almost touching. His 22-250 needed them at and his 223 did not care as long as they were the same.

We shot so many Parie dogs that it was not funny. I would like to get a 222 but I just got a 6mmbr so that is on the far back burner. You will have to let us know what works best for you.

This is post number 15.

I have a 40X action with a 25" Broughton barrel on it and it likes the bullet right at the lands, although I have to admit I never tried them .020 off.

I just followed Berger’s instructions on how to find the best seating depth on a target rifle. I was using 52 grn Bergers in a Rem 700 with 1:14” twist. To my surprise, .080” off the lands shot noticeably better than the others. Who would have figured?! Time to try seating in and out in .010” increments from there now.

I use a 0,010 jump with my .222 & Berger 55 grain bullets. My barrel is a McGowan 1:12 & I get excellent accuracy.
I use 23.3 gr of Viht N 133 & Lapua brass, cci primers. They did not like being seated out to the lands.

Every rifle will vary. i had a BDl that wouldn't shoot for beans till .035 off the lands. The next, a 40XB wanted it within .005. Start at .010 off, go in. If at jam you see no change, go out and keep going till you see what it will do.

Mine liked neither "jump" or "close" .005" in the lands and the Berger 52 FB Varmint came alive. The old Vixen shoots like a modern day custom.

My 222, a Borden Rimrock action with a1 in 14 twist shows it's best accuracy at .005 off the lamds. Have shot many groups in the high .1s
