222 Reamer Question

I finally received some Lapua 222 brass along with 53 grain vmax's and have a question about reamer size.

My loaded round neck diameter measures right at .249 to .250. Shilen's 222 reamers go from .250 to .255 with nothing between. Is .255 to much neck space for a .250 loaded round? My only other option is to get the .250 neck size and neck turn down .002.

Thanks,

Shawn

You can shoot a 0.250" neck in a 0.255 chamber without a problem - it will be much better than turning the necks.

I turn necks on EVERYTHING.....

Turning necks is a one time deal, simple and painless.

Personally,i would not run brass in a .005 clearence neck, too much brass movement.

I have .002 on all my reamers.

Good luck with your decision.

Phil.

the downside to doing this is you are really working the brass...neck down to .248, load and stretch to .250, shoot and stretch to .255. the neck rebounds to .254 and it's back to sizing to .248. i don't enjoy neck turning but tight chambers seem to help with accuracy.

No way would I ever run necks that had .005 clearance..
Turning is not rocket science these days...

My .222 reamer is set up for a .012 neck thickness

.012+.012=.024

Bullet dia.=.224

.224+.024=.248

The reamer has a .250 neck.

Shilen sent a reply to my inquiry about reamers and they informed me they can ream to my specs with their throat reamers. If I neck turn, I could go with a .250 reamer and if I do not neck turn, I could go with a .252 or .253 spec.

Thanks,

Shawn

Shawn,

Pick your poison..... ;D

Either way you go, you`ll have a blast shooting the deuce.....

First is what kind of shooting? If bench shooting, even club I would turn. If shooting in field go with the .252 and not turn. I like to turn as Lapua necks can have .001 run out.
