.222 BR Load Data

I'am new to BR shooting and looking for recommendations on good starting BR loads for .222. The Gun is an 1968 vintage Rem 700 Varminter Special. It always did shoot under 1/2 MOA. Would like to get a Custom in 6BR but felt that the .222 would be a good gun to learn the ropes on at local shoots.

I have posed a similar question and as I recall another suggestion was about 19grs of IMR4198. I have had my best luck with H322 and plan on trying N133. Fuzzbusters recommendation for 22.2 of H322 matches my info. In my case it may be more of a metering - measuring situation than one powder being better than the other. I also have a 700V that has shot very well. I usually use 7 1/2 or BR4 primers with W-Super or similar brass. I think the new Lapua is avialable now. Try some Sierra 1400's or 1410's. I also like Bart's 52's. Keep us posted. Peter.

Thanks for the Info. I just bought some H322 & Varget.

Peter I wish I could find Rem 71/2's or CCI BR4's. It has taken me 3 weeks to find any and they were CCI 400's. I found 500 at one store and 600 this past Sat. at another store. I have standing orders for 5k at 3 different Gun shops.

Which would be better Boat Tails or Flat Bottoms?

i'm shooting a factory 700 bdl sporter barrel with 50 gr hornady sx's winchester brass with 7.5 primers at a aol of 2.185. my guess is flat bottom bullets would be better. just guessing.

Most bullet manufacturers suggest flat base bullets because they are easier to achieve good results with. They also ad that the benefit of a boat tail does not occur until about 250 yards. If you can get them try the 53 gr Sierra 1400's. I usually use about .010 off the rifling but I would experiment with .015 & .020. With a factory chamber it is usually hard to get .010 or closer with a boat tail bullet and still have enough of the bullet in the neck. Most suggest keeping the diameter of the bullet in the neck so in this instance that is .224. My plans for this spring is to experiment with seating depths with my press etc at the range. New thing for me. I have not used the 400's but they may work fine. Other people have had good results with standard Winchester. Peter.

tripleduce: My standard accuracy load, for 2, 222 chamberings) is the Hodgdon recommended, listed on their can label),22.2 grs. of H322, with any high quality 50 gr. and both my rifles 'like' .020' of jump. Also have tried the traditional load combos with H4198 and 50 gr. bullets, and it also is very good. Also get excellent results with the Sierra 53 gr. HP flat-base #1400, but I reduce the powder charge to 21.5 grs., and it too is very accurate with both my 1-14 barrels: a factory Rem 700 and a Hart on a Sako L-46. The 'little' 222 is so easy to load for, no tricks: it seems to work with any good combination of powder & bullets.

Thank you. That is just what I was looking for.
I'am looking into getting a Redding 'Instant Indicator' which sounds like a good all around tool for reloading accurately.
