221 Fireball and heavy bullets anyone?

I'm receiving a barrel 1:8 chambered 221 Fireball this week.

The plan is to shoot heavy-for-cartridge bullets (69-90gr) bullets in order to shoot birds and stay within local law (specifies 221 Fireball most powerful cartridge allowed for this hunting).

Anyone done this before?
What powders did you use?

I know of no one who has done this, I have gone as high as 55gr, but settled on 50gr,

my thought on powder would be the use no faster than h322 or 2015, as the pressures from faster powder in my opinion would be too much, I would email Hodgdon help@hodgdon.com and ask their opinion.

Perusing ammo guide, I see loads for the heaviest bullet listed, 70 gr, velocities are ugly, in the neighborhood of 1500-1700. The 90s are going to be an even bigger "slug". I doubt you're going to spin up that bullet fast enough to get any accuracy.

I suspected as much. It is not a good project in terms of ballistics or usefulness, it's just done to meet legal requirements and avoid the rimmed 22 Hornet.

Not to worried about V0, after all it will replace the 22 LR. I just want to minimize winddrift as the 22 LR can be very difficult to use on the mountain.
(Have also bought a 17 HMR should this project be a total failure).

Must be some big birds!

Not sure what you are hunting but there are several pistol silhouette shooters that are using the 221 in fast twist { 1-7 & 1-8 } XP's and Contenders with 14 & 15" Bbl's on the steel targets out to 200 Yds/Meters . A good friend that passed away last year had a 1-7 T 221 chambered XP and shot 90 gn SMK's and Berger's. He loaded his with I 4227 and used them on both the big bore targets as well as the half size ones.
Most others use the 221 on just the half size using 1-8 T with 69 th 80 SMK's. The majority use AA 2015. I'll see if I still have my data

hey Roe, just wondering if you have the rifle put together already and your results with it. I have also similar plans. regards
