221 and freebore

Bruce W

If i were to order a reamer for 221 and wanted to shoot lighter bullets in the 40 grain weight what would be the optimum freebore. I'm also guessing a 14 twist would be in order. Your comments please. Thanks, Bruce

Zero freebore, none. Even with 0 freebore a 40gr Vmax/Bal tip touching the lands will seat only about 1/2way down the neck. My reamer has a .250" neck and works perfectly with Rem brass. But if you'll be using Lapua, get it before ordering the reamer.....that stuff runs thicker in the web and neck. And Dave Kiff at PPG will surely be familiar with it.

A 14 twist will be perfect for this.

12 tw. works just as well, plus I have to go to a faster powder to get clean burn. 4198 good with 50's but 1680 burns clean with 40's. Figure it's a pressure thing. Zero free bore a good choice, too. Good luck, Tom.
