220 swift powders

I would like to thin out some powders I no longer use, But I may be aquiring a couple old 220swift m70 winchersters my grandpa has, so I would hate to trde off something I may use down the road.
I can look in manuals, and I have, but what are some of your favorites for 220swift? I would probably shoot 50-55 grain varmint bullyets or 64 grain win power points in them

I've probably used more IMR 4064 than any other powder. Although I haven't used H-414 I am pretty sure it is slower, whitch should make a better swift powder.
Mainly I used 4064 in 22-250 and I used it in a swift but I only had one and it was only OK in accuracy dept. Not to take away from the swift but the one I owned was a EARLY! howa action with an E.R. Shaw barrel and it was used when I traded for it. Gary

4064 is probably a little fast for the swift. You can probably get a lot from the Hodgeton loading site with modern powders

Howdy !

Have loaded for and shot a bunch of .22-250, some .220Swift; and my wildcat " .22-35 Remington " wildcat.... which has case capacity between that of a stock .22-250; and a .22-250AI.

I prefered WW760 ( H414 same stuff ) for use under 55 - 60gr bullets, shot from 24 - 26" barrels.
I also use FED Large Magnum Rifle Match primers for use with WW760 ( and other powders ).

A more-recent powder that holds some promise is " 6.5 StaBal " . The " burn rate " is in the right range, and it is a temperature-stable " ball " powder. From the data I have seen, Hybrid 100V is also in the same bunr rate zone, but does not quite provide the same level of velocity.

These ball powders measure so nice. WW760 gave me great barrel life in my .22-35 Remington, when shooting " Soybeanus Digestus " w/ Hornady 55SX.

You can stabilize .224" cal 60 grainers in a 24" 1-14, as-long-as the length of custom 60s is held to < .750"

Interesting you bring up the 60 grain in 14 twist conundrum… I also have a 14 twist 22-250 rem 700 and it has always shot 64gr win power points with varget very well. I have considered trying the hornady 60gr flat base hollowpoint but never got around to it. Nosler and speer make a bonded round noses that are 60something grains that may be worth a try as well. Which ones have you had good luck with?

4064 has been my choice for the Swift, it’s always performed well so Ive never attempted to change powders but I’m sure there are several good options.

Win 760, or 4064. Not sure of this but was told that H414 will no longer available, which is no consequence since 760 is the same powder. Others that should work well if you have them are AA2700 and R17. JME. WD

IMR 4064 is classic from 50-63g bullets, but is ROUGH on barrels.

AA2700 is the easiest on barrels, next is Win 760 and H414 with H380 doing well with the 50g bullets.

14 twist swifts do well with 60g Sierra HP on deer, but they are dismal on coyotes. 63g Sierra is simply fantastic as the throats get long or if you start out with a long throat.

N550 eats barrels, also.

Don't intend to hijack the post.

I believe the long ( .750"+ ) .224" cal custom 60HPs were made by Hemmett's.
This was already a couple decades ago.

I wanted to try them on groundhogs, after already trying the Hornady 60HPs.

For me, the 60s did not out perform the 55SX I was shooting ( my guns, my loads, my ranges ); so I did not adopt their use.

IMHO - If propelled fast enough, a good 55gr varmint bullet can clean kill a groundhog @ 500yd.

Anything around the burn rate of Varget should work fine. You really should try some 40 grain V-Maxes with a worked up hot load. My single shot Savage varmint rifle would shoot Hornady factory ammo into just over .4" for five shots with factory bedding and a trigger adjustment. Looking at the load data Varget, which I typically paired with 55 gr. bullets is a top performer with the 40s.
