220 swift brass

DLT

Somewhere amongst my many searches on accurate shooter I “ thought “ I read where 220 swift brass could be formed from a different cartridge case but without the rim I just can’t find it. If it’s so could someone please point me in the right direction. Thanks in advice

Ya, the longer I think on this the more I think its a no...I was thinking of making 6mm Rem from 7mm mauser.
Are you looking for a rimless 220 Swift case for a specific reason? Bolt face issue? ?? Curiosity has bitten me.

My 220 swift gathers no flies…. only makes flies. I’ve seen more critters drop in the crosshairs of my swift than all my other cartridges combined x 100. I have not heard of any other cartridge to make a swift case out of other than the 6MM Lee navy. Most people are probably better served with a 22–250 etc. But for us that like performance along with irreplaceable nostalgia, it gets no better than the swift in my humble opinion.

I used to have one before the brass got aggravating to find. Not long ago I thought I was researching on here and came across it could be formed from x cartridge but it would be rimless. No feeding issues. Thinking about a future build if that mystery brass was obtainable.

Yes, understood.

Sorry that I was off on a tangent there for a minute.

How much Swift brass does one who is considering a build figure he needs? I have 200 for my Swift. I shoot groundhogs. I wore out (over 20 years) my last barrel with 150 brass. And that old barrel was wupped before I shot it! If you take care to not run it stupid hot and use powders that make velocity without barrel frying, and size the brass without over sizing, it lasts a long time.

My last batch is S and B and is fairly consistent stuff, given it's purpose. I had age old (40 years at least) Eupoean brass Norma? that I would have continued to use if the chamber in my old barrel hadn't been a tad on the large size near the breech. My new barrel (a Hart 12 twist) has tighter tolerances than the old 1950's unk make that was on it. It shoots very well too and I love my Swift far more than my much fancier 40XB 22-250.

Build it and brass will come...just keep watching the for sale here ads and in time you will have it.

I’ve had 4 swifts, you don’t appreciate one until you spend some time with one, pretty amazing cartridge. I never found brass to be an issue. You can usually find it if you look and if you can’t a simple WTB add will produce it, lots of swift brass laying around on dusty shelves.

The only two bullets I ever used were 55 grain ballistic tips and 60 partitions. Those partitions would bang flop deer in spectacular ways.

Post #8 sums my own feeling on it very well.

My first Prairie Dog trip in 1999 included my first rifle dedicated to the task. Ruger M77 MKII 220 Swift. Love the gun but haven't shot it in a while but won't sell it or the brass. Been taking 17's and 222's instead but any post about the Swift will always get my attention. A quick search just now found some 220 brass. https://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item/002858615h/220-swift-primed-rifle-brass-100-count
I acquired D Frakers Ruger #1 Varmint 220 Swift last year. I don’t think it was ever fired. Fixed that and was pleasantly surprised as I had heard some were fickle in the accuracy department, this ain’t one of them.

Another Swift lover here. I’ve found that the old “blue bag” Winchester brass is pretty good along with Norma. It’s a pity that one of the quality brass makers won’t make a batch of high quality stuff, I think that there are a lot of Swift users out there that would jump on it.
Anyway, a day in the field with a 220 Swift is a great day and I have enough brass for the current barrel on my Cooper and the next :D

I have been playing with mine for two months now. Was amazed at the accuracy with 52 Bergers. Now is a good time of the year to play with it. I can shoot three shot strings and not worry about barrel heating up. Found that the case needs to be pretty full of powder for best results!

Don't know if that is your 1st Swift or not but they are amazing. Mine is the Varmint/Target model. Still a beautiful gun just haven't been taking it to MT.

Bill I had to try the cool aid, I was too many years without a 222;-).
Yup, the first.

Winchester 220 Swift brass is a really good bang for the buck, but it's not easy to come by.

Out of all the brass that's available out there, I think Norma is about the only one I'd buy.

Too bad Factory 220 Swift ammo is not cheap. Thus buying it to reload the brass is not the best economical option.
