220 swift ackley dies

does anyone know for sure if the regular swift seat die can be used to seat bullets in the improved cases? i have just rechambered to 40* ackley and wondered if its necessary to get the ackley seat die. thanks greg

Have you thought of sketching one case on top of the other?
If you draw each case on graph paper at 10X scale you will find the shoulder of the old die is smaller than the new case. So it will not fit.
A Vickerman type seater or Lyman PA seater die will work but not a conventional solid die.
Did you do any planning before grabbing the reamer?

not much planning. just took .050 off breech and reamed w/ the ai reamer and set headspace .002 over go gage
fer sure need ai resize die.
just wondering if i can use the regular bullet seat die?
$51 diff in single die and set. just hoping i can get by w/o new seater die.
dont see why not but dont know til i know, or maybe someone else knows.

How much reloading have you done? If you are familiar with reloading at all you would know that you cannot use the original die to reload the AI version of the same case.

Run the A reamer in the seater die

OOOOuch - unless you're talking a L.E. Wislon seater, or, the "sleve" for either Redding, or, Forster BR type seaters - don't do this! Presuming HSS reamer, running it into a hardened die will likely ruin your reamer. Per above, your Ackley Swift will require a new/separate seater--die. RG

been reloading since 1970. started at 16 in high school
doing barrel work for 6 months
im talking about seat die. not resize die
i have used different seat dies before that didnt match the cartridge. some wil switch.

its .033 diff in the shoulder between standard (.402) and ai (.435) and it feels like there prolly isnt that much wiggle in the standard seat die with standard cartridge.
i dont have a small enough telescoping gage to actually measure the shoulder of the standard seat die. .500 is smallest but my 7rum seat die measures .024 over its case shoulder

so only other way to know for a fact is to see if it will work.
just wondering if anyone has tried.
come to think of it 25-06 is very close at .441
im using manson hss reamer
and thanks for all the replies....im still learning

cant do that. even if the die wasnt hardened the reamer for the seat die must be larger than the chamber reamer

Actually, the chamber [finish] reamer makes for a perfect seater-die.:) L.E. Wilson (straight-line), Redding and Forster (BR sleeve type) seaters are perfect candidates for a "re-chamber job" (Wilson provided pilot-hole blanks) - they are not hardened, thus, readily machinable.;) RG
