220 Russian to 6mmPPC

Gentleman: Sometime in the future I plan to move from using a 223 Remington to a 6mmPPC. Can someone please tell me what tools I will need, and who makes them ??? And, what are the steps taken, to convert a 220 Russian case to a 6mmPPC case ??? I will be using Lapua brass and do not want to neck turn. I have read the site article on the 6mmPPC and am now looking for some specifics. Thanks for your help and assistance.

I just recently acquired a .262 neck 6ppc myself. After my experience prepping brass for my 30BR I decided to buy pre-prepped brass. There are several vendors, I used Ron Hoehn. The brass he sells is already weight sorted, necked up and turned.

All that is needed is to load up some appropiate primers, powder and bullets and go fire form the brass. I borrowed a Harrells die to resize my cases and I need to fire a couple of cases once more and send them off to Harrells to get a custom sizing die. The die I borrowed was a -2 and I think I need a -1. It will be interesting to see what Harrells sends me.

If you don't want to deal with a tight neck then you should look into Gene Beggs 6mmBeggs. Both tight neck and no turn neck reamers are available. The 22 and 6mm Beggs both are based on the 220 Russian Lapua brass with the chamber having some minor variations on the 220 Russian chamber. Gene has reloading dies and info available.

What will the gun be used for?

If you do not have all the tools you might think about a 6br. You can get a no turn reamer and just load and shoot.

Making a 6 PPC case from a 220 Russian is the same as making an "Improved" case. You will be changing the shoulder angle and the body taper both at the same time.

First, expand the neck using a 6mm expander mandrel. Now strip the bolt so you can feel the case as it's being chambered. If you feel a "crush" fit you are OK to pour in a powder charge, seat a bullet, and fire-form the case. But, if you do not feel a crush fit you are going to have to expand the neck to a larger caliber, such as 7mm, and then slowly create the new neck with your FL die, a little at a time, until you get the crush fit needed to hold the case solidy against the bolt face during fire-forming.

In the 6 PPC you will probably get very good accuracy while fire forming so there is no need to consider the fire-form step as a waste of bullets and powder.

The tools needed are an expander, loading dies, and a trimmer to even up the case mouth after fire-forming.

It's actually a very easy and simple job. It sounds more complicated than it is.

Good Luck

As usual, Ray is right on. Your last post indicates shooting VFS matches with the rifle, and if that is the case, your choosing the wrong cartridge. You will want a 30BR, unless you like losing.

As usual, tightneck is correct.:) The 6PPC can be used for both group and score but the bigger bullet diameter of the 30 BR will get you an extra point or two and that is the difference between winning and first or second loser.

Its a simple fire forming operation, no special tools necessary. The only tool needed is a something to expand the necks to 6mm. Most of the 6PPC sizing dies out there will do this as is. Load up your expanded cases with a full case of N133, seat a cheap 6mm,in the 70 gr range) bullet on top, and shoot...instant 6PPC case.
