.220 Rocket Load Info

I am loading for a .220 Weatherby Rocket. Any load info you would care to share? I believe I am zeroing in on 760 powder.
How much would you say you can go over .220 swift data?

You can use 220 swift AI info. I don't remember what I used but I was running a 50 ballistic tip at 4200 and then dropped it to 4150 because once it warmed up outside it was hard to open. I was shooting a ruger #1 and it was hard to pull the block down. This was 20 years ago also so not as many powders available then as now. Remember the are laws of physics. Those who run a 22/250AI with a 55gr. bullet at 4300 fps are way over 60-63k psi. 22/250AI has the same capacity as a standard swift so there for should push a bullet roughly the same speed as the swift.

Phil Sharpe's Complete Guide to Handloading only has data with IMR powders c. 1948.

Ackley wasn't impressed with the Rocket. He writes that it didn't prove to be much faster than the Swift. FWIW, his load data for the Rocket is very similar or the same as the Swift.

Handloader #143 has an article that's reprinted in Wolfe's Wildcat Cart. #2. Handloader's Digest #10 has another by the same author on the large cased 22s with much the same data. From a 26" Weatherby rifle max velocities were 4277 with 4064 & 45s, 4223 with H414 (W760) & 50s, 4016 with MRP (RL22) & 55s, 3748 with H414 & 63s, & finally 3588 with IMR-4831 & 70s.

How much increase is there in capacity of the Rocket case over the Swift? One of the 4350s, RL17, or even RL19 or 22 might also be good candidates with 50-55s.

Right now 43 grains of 760 only gives me 3800 with a 53 v max. The powder gives very good accuracy. Did not have any pressure signs or a hard bolt lift.

Do you have a stash of 760 you have to use? That powder is old school and on the very slow side. I used Varget in mine.

A lot has changed since the 220 came about. Ackley and Sharpes data is pretty well dated, as is a lot of early data, even to the questionable side with today’s equipment and technology.
There are several early “speedsters” I can think of that could do with some NEW data and testing. The powder supply and with the “new improved” stuff that shows up, only to be unobtainable or discontinued a few years later does not help anything. Hell even old standbys are scarce. Dunno how long it’s been since I have seen any H322, let alone several others.

Found 22/250 Ackley info in my Sierra book. Thanks for the tip.

22/250 ai...TN.14tw 45.2gr W760/55gr Sie ran 4,064....back before FL sizing every time. I neck sized 6 times before FL sizing. Pressure was irrelevant.
