22 SLR

I could only find one thread on this but has any one built a 22SLR?

it seems like it could be quite an impressive long range 22 caliber rifle with an improved shoulder and long neck.

I realize the 22 Creed is very close but I’m curious as to the SLR case would be necked down to 22.

Howdy !

Wildcats like the .220 Jaybird, .22 Cheetah MkII; and .22-243 MIddlestead are very close to what you are talking about. The Jaybird having a .460" shoulder diam w/ a 35* shoulder angle, the Cheetah Mk11 with a .453" shoulder diam and 28* shoulder angle; and the Middlestead having .453" shoulder diam and 30* shoulder angle. All based of .243Win .

I ran some numbers on a .22 Creedmoor a while back using the 95 grain Sierra MK and I wasn't that impressed with that cartridge vs. some of the 7mm cartridges. Add to that the approximate 500 round barrel life and nope, not worth it.

22 Creed should run to about 1000 if it’s not shot in long strings. I’m not sure what your application would be for.

I think comparing a 22 to a 7mm ballistically is like comparing a Prius to Hemi Cuda though.

.600 or higher BC at close to 3200 is pretty impressive ballistics when you’re dealing with very little recoil.

For me I’m looking at 75 class bullets I’m a short barrel. 22-250ai I have now is good and I don’t know that a bigger case would gain anything at this point.

The problems would be barrel life as noted, and exploding heavy bullets if they were your choice. If this were for a slower twist barrel and lighter bullets it might work, but the existing 90s approaching or above 2900 will probably disintegrate with regularity.
there have been some 22BR projects you might look into.

This would specifically for shooting 75 grain bullets at coyotes. So barrel life isn’t a concern.

The idea being to drive a 75 at 3300 easily from a 20” barrel so brass isn’t worked too hard.

Have a cartridge that feeds slightly better than the 22-250AI from a standard BDL box. (They work well of course but there’s always room to improve)

Eliminate the need to fireform (I’ve read the SLR is formed simply by running it through a die)

Be able to use Lapua brass or an equivalent quality.

Be different enough just because.

I realize a 22 Creedmoor fits the bill here other than the last part but I as stated, I like different stuff.

I’ve got a 22Br and it’d be a touch slow on a 20” barrel. Works great on a 25” though!

Do it get that 22 SLR up and running, imagine if every one just shot the same calibers all the time.
If you miss a coyote with "virgin" SLR brass formed after running it through a DIE it wasn't the brass that made you miss. Sako 243 brass through a SLR DIE and your ready to go or if you want to spend some time prepping and sorting Winchester brass that's also a easy button

Ummm.......What?

Another point to consider is that the 6SLR chamber was designed for Winchester brass, Lapua has too much neck thickness so you'll need to turn Lapua necks for a standard 6SLR chamber. Take this into account if you decide to order a reamer for your .22SLR and make sure the neck has enough clearance unless you're going to turn necks. Design from a loaded round if you can.
