22 RF Chambers

Many may know this, but you get a ring that builds up in the chamber of the 22LR, it is quite hard, can only be seen with a bore scope. It is just past the case mouth.
When it builds up big enough, it can actually swage down the bullet.
The chamber of you 22 needs a good cleaning at least every 500 rounds, a brush spun by a drill works as do other methods, just keep it out of the rifling.

I like to scrub the chamber and the bore (just not as much) from time to time with JB bore Shine on a patch. Go easy on it in the barrel, but the leade can have more scrubbing done.

You will find an accuracy increase and it stops first shot fliers in many rifles.

Go easy, don't over do, but do keep your chamber clean, you will find it makes a difference.

Hello John,
Nice to see ur post. Ah yes the 'ole "Carbon Ring." Can be a pain in the rear sometimes.

Good to see you you also, I'm glad to see you over here too.
I got my new house, a 50 yd range will soon be in the back yard !

I agree with the importance of cleaning the carbon ring in the chamber on all firearms especially target rifles and pistols . This is often overlooked because without a borescope you would never know it's there , and without a borescope you would never know if you actually cleaned it out . I spin a patch with Iosso paste every 50 rounds in centerfires , and every 100 rounds in my rimfires . It is very difficult to remove if you let it build up .

It is a great idea to keep ahead of it. I'd use JB Bore Brite as it's less abrasive if you clean as often as you do.
I would not want to possibly enlarge the chamber, the Bore Shine will get the job done.
Not letting it build up keeps your rifle shooting it's best.

Many don't clean the barrels of match rifles often because they are so smooth, but regular rifles with their bores a little rougher, it's best to clean them more often. Cleaning the chamber even if you don't clean the bore is a very good thing to do.
I could not agree with you more.

Just a note JB bore paste and JB bore Brite are abrasive , Iosso is non abrasive . I do a thourough cleaning with Sweets and Bore Shine , if it's a rough factory barrel I may use JB paste to finish removing any copper or powder residue that may be left in the bore , then I remove the powder ring with Iosso , then clean thorouhly one more time with Bore Shine , dry patch till patches come out clean . I never like to leave any abrasive residue in the bore or chamber . I don't mix the Sweets and Bore shine , I use the Sweets as a lubricant , it has a lot of surfactants . One last thing is don't confuse Bore Brite with Bore Shine , two different products .

I always though the Iosso was an abrasive, I've never used it, you learn something new every day.
Do go easy on the Sweets, especially if your barrel is S/S, it will etch the surface of the metal because of it's high ammonia content if not cleaned off quickly.
I try to use cleaners with no ammonia.
The Gunzilla CLP is by far the best bore cleaner I have ever found, it's non toxic, which is good for you, has no ammonia, good for your barrel and the stuff works fantastic.
You can get it from the company, do a search, Cheaper Than Dirt and www.savagegunsmithing.com is also a distributor. The smith there has been in business for 26 years, this is the first bore cleaning product he will Endorse.
I love the stuff, they also make a copper cleaner, no ammonia and non toxic that works well.

I'm pretty anal in protecting my barrel, sounds like you are also. Do give the Gunzilla a try, after shooting a couple hundred rounds, I run one loose dry patch, one patch with Gunzilla, let it sit about 10 Min and 2 to 3 dry patches and the bore is totally clean. I used to use Shooters Choice, it took twice the patches to get the same barrel clean.
