22 PPC or 20 PPC: Varmint hunting

Tooter, I bought Brad's rifle...it has an 11 twist x-caliber barrel. You are right about it shooting like a BR rig. I have some BIB 40gr bullets and it is shooting them into a real small hole. I have been playing with it using different primers and powder combinations and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it...the Norma brass makes it real simple...no neck turning. It has a .231 neck and loaded rounds mic at .227...just right. I shot some 32gr vmax's for kicks and grins and the chrono showed them pushing over 4300...neat little cartridge.

Phill---I am building a 20ppc and havn't yet bought my dies. Please tell me what you have and how much money you need for them. I will take them if at all what I need and reasonable.

Gene, if I remember correctly, Brad was shooting bugholes with 39 SBKs and AA2520.

I'm shooting an early Cooper Model 21VE that I originally got with a well shot out 22 PPC barrel, but the wood was so spectacular I just had to have it. Today it's a switch barrel rig with Lilja 6 & 22 PPC barrels and now including the X-Caliber 20 Blitz. It is a sweet rig, but I must be careful when approaching upper pressure limit loads due to the small bolt/receiver diameter of the Model 21s. Cooper stopped offering PPCs in the model 21 due to much speculation about flexure resulting from projected bolt face loading for the PPC case diameter.

I've not experienced any such phenomena, but it is constantly on my mind when working up OCW loads. I also have Brad's 20 SCC in another Cooper 21 and it shoots bugholes as well with 35 Bergers and 32 SBKs. All good stuff coming from CRT!!

Good shooting ----- tooter

I like my Ross Sherman 22 PPC and with 50 grain vmax and a stout load behind it, a 500 yard woodchuck is hurting! It is an early no turn PPC and shoots great. Personally I would rather shoot than play about forming cases, so the PPC USA works out fine for me

Ya, Brad was using 2520, but it seems the newer lots of this powder are a little different so he went to LT32...I am going to work with some of the newer 2520 and see what I can get it to do...also going to try some H4895. Are you jumping your bullets or having them in contact? I am running about .015 off the lands and seem to be doing well with that...did pierce a couple of primers with fireform loads and backed them charge off a little.

Dies are listed for sale in the components section, for viewing.

Gene, been seating the 55 Bergers to touch lands but not jammed.

I got several lbs.of Lovex MR (D073-06) from Powder Valley. Lovex/Explosia was the Czech source for 2520 back when AA was operating out of TN. Though no relationship exists with AA anymore, in Europe it's touted to have similar characteristics as 2520 ---- I'm using it in a 20-223AI and it performs very consistently with decent velocities. If your thinking of getting some of the new (St Marks FL) AA2520, might also think of picking up a pound of the Lovex MR for comparison in the Blitz with 39-40 gr. bullets.

Might have to try the Lovex...what primers are you using? I have mainly been using the CCI 450...Brad had been using the Tula's but those are no longer available...the 450's seem to be giving me the same results as the Tula's so I will probably stick with them.

450s with most 55 Berger loads except BR4s with VV N540 powder.

Looked at primer brisance comparisons and last week picked up a brick of Rem 7 1/2 Benchrest primers to try out. They have the same .025 cup thickness and brisance (arguably even greater) as the 450s ---- just compelled to tinker and try different things.

Be careful with the Remington 7 1/2...it seems way hotter...I tried CCI400, CCI450, Fed 205M, Tula and the Rem 7 1/2 with the same powder charges and the CCI400's pierced on the low load, the Rem 7 1/2's showed primer flow on the low load and velocity was REAL fast...shot the next load up and primer flow increased as did velocity but stiff bolt lift, the 205M's were about the same as the 7 1/2's...not quite as "hot" and only got primer flow and stiff bolt lift on the hottest load...the Tula and 450's seemed to handle the loads the best from lowest to highest charge without issue.

I have been shooting a 20 PPC for a few years now and had it set back about 500 rounds ago.

I use 40 Vmax XBR 8208 and BR4`s for 4100fps out of a 22" barrel.

It is a very different animal to 22 PPC but like its sibling`s accuracy is a given.
