22 mag accuracy?

Just curious as to what is acceptable accuracy from my Sav/Anschutz 141M. I bought it used, maybe well used, but I have high expectations even though I'm pretty sure it will never be a bench rest accurate rifle. That being said, the previous owner cut 4 inchs off the barrel. If there was collector value, that's gone, but I bought the rifle for a shooter not a collector. The only ammo I have right now is CCI 40grain HP's. They do really well at 50 yds but not so good at 100yds. But I read a few reports and some say the CCI shot the worst of all the ammo tried. I just ordered 4 box's of different brands of ammo to try and hope it will tighten the groups up. I don't always clean my 22LR's very often but wonder how often the 22 Mag needs to be cleaned. I know my 22LR's don't like squeaky clean barrels and usually take several rounds before they settle down. Is the mag similar? Its amazing how warm the barrel gets after a 5 round group. I never thought it would get warm that soon.

My experience with a Ruger M77/22 magnum was not as good as expected. Having tried most if nearly not all .22 mag. ammo, the best groups I could get at 100 yds. were around 1.5". I bought a Lilja 17 HMR barrel for the rifle and it's a tack driver! Haven't used the 22 mag. barrel since.

I have owned a custom Win. Highwall, a Savage A22 and an Anschutz all in 22 Magnum. The most accurate ammo for me is the Hornady V-Max. The Savage was slightly over an inch at 100 yards. The Anschutz and custom Highwall were both under an inch at 100 yards. Yes, the CCI was the worse at about 6 inches. The doubters about mag accuracy never had a quality firearm in that caliber.

I could hit a coon or maybe smaller targets @ 100yds but a 2" group was the best and maybe a 3" was worst. Sure hoping different ammo will shrink those groups. An inch would be great. As long as it was consistent. I have even considered a new custom barrel but read it might not shoot any better than what's on it now.

It's all about the ammo. I have a Marlin 922M that I absolutely love. Shoots about a 1" group at 50 yards with most ammo but absolutely loves the CCI 40gr Maxi Mag HP and will shoot them into half inch or better on a nice calm day.

The internet and gunshops are full of guys with 22 magnums that shoot one hole at 100 yards, but you know how that goes. I've owned Anschutz, CZ, Kimber, and a pile of others in 22 WMR and I'm generally thrilled with a rifle that will average 1 1/2" at 100 yards. I've actually found very few that will do that. That's "average", not that fluke group that we all like to get and carry around in our wallets.

The 22 mag was brought out to mainly have much better impact force than the other 22 rimfires, not so much for accuracy.
However, if you test various brands, etc. for your rifle you should find one, maybe two that will offer around 3/4 inch grouping at 100 yrds. Then stock up.

I had a Marlin 882 SSV 22Mag that would shoot 3/4 groups some days and 1” groups the next with 30 gr Hornady Vmax and my Bergara shoots bout them same and that bout all I expect in a 22 mag but the 17 HMR in my Bergara Carbon smokes my mag

I'm getting ready for pd, will have my Savage 93 22 mag for the 100 yard and under(mostly). I expect to hit 50 yards and in, 75 yard miss I wonder what I DID WRONG, hit most at 100 yards and I do mostly take head shots. This run will be using the Federal 30 gr TNT.

My Rem 597 .22mag has reliably shot 1" at 100 since I put a spring kit in it for the trigger. Shoots the low ball cost Remington 40gr ammo the best. Some lots better than others, but decent non the less. All brands, bullet weights, including several lot numbers of each, have never shot like the standard offering from Remington.o_ORF is a very fickle thing.

There was another guy at the range today. He said if he got 1 1/2 inch groups with his rifle he was satisfied. Mine shoots very good at 50 but really opens up at 100.

My experience.

Volauartsen = 1” @ 100 with multiple brands, heavier shot better, 45 grain did the best.

CZ = 1.5” @ 100 with several types and weights

Old Mossberg 640 = never shot 100 yard groups, it’s my grandpas old rifle he used to shoot squirrels on the wood pile, has a peep but it’s very accurate. Need to try at 100 just to see.

I have a friend who also has a volquartsen and his edges mine a bit in the accuracy dept, he can get under an inch with it. There’s such a variety of 22mag ammo out there and rifles seem to have a strong preference for some and puke others.

I have even considered a new custom barrel
If you do go that route, you might consider changing it to a 17HMR. I haven't shot a 22 mag since I was a kid with a Marlin 57M that shot extremely well. But I shoot lots of 17 HMR these days on my prairie dog hunts.

I can only comment on fouling of the 17 HMR. Read a lot before I got my first one, mostly that they shoot well and foul quickly. And that they are a challenge to clean. Nothing could be further than the truth for me. I mostly shoot Lilja barrels, and they just don't pick up any copper. I might clean after 500-700 round, mostly because I feel guilty if I don't.

I was shooting my Vudoo with different ammo at 100m just to see what it seemed to prefer. This is how it did. I think it will be a challenge for a 22 mag to top this.

My Marlin 25M will do a half inch at 50 yards and about an inch at 100 with Hornady 30 gr. VMax. It is deadly on ground hogs within range but a pleasure to shoot on the rifle range. I had a Remington XT 22 Mag. which shot the same and I could not tell it from the Marlin. My son in law now has that one.

I have a RPR with a cheap ATN 3-9 night vision scope on it that I now use for most of my hunting. I have taken rabbit, hare, cat, feral dog and pigs with it. I get in close (25-50 yards) and place shots carefully. Accuracy isn't an issue due to the close range.

I did shoot 5×10 shot groups at 100m (109 yards) over the front of the vehicle with the scope in daytime mode on 9× (image is not great) and was able to keep every group under 2 1/2 inches which is pretty close to 2MOA. I think the 10 shot groups are more realistic. Several 3 shot groups were well under an inch. When I chronographed various ammo the velocities were all over the place. Best was Hornady 45gr Critical Defence FTX. 20 Rounds over the chrono had an ES of only 76fps. It was what I used to test at 100m.

I put an old Tasco 6-24 on my Sav 93 heavy barrel today. Rem 40 gr hp was slightly under 1" at 100. The Federal 30 tnt was not quite as good, but they are hard on pd so I can live with it as I really want the 22 mag for under 100 yards. 300 rds going with for the short shots over 3 days. If the 22 mag ammo prices keep escalating, will probably just stop using it for pd and run the 223 for short shots.
