22 mag accuracy?

download (2).jpegdownload (1).jpeg
Left is my group at 50yds each group is different ammo. Right is my 12 year old son at 50 yes his are only 2 shots. CZ 457 22 mag. Edit: another forum asked me what would happen if I tried to hit what I was aiming at. I guess there's a reason I don't frequent there.

I took mine out again today. Been having the hardest time deciding on a scope. My 4th choice was a Weaver 3x9 and I think it will just have to do for now. Before I went out, I gave the rifle a good cleaning. I had cleaned it when I got it but not a deep cleaning. The 40 grain CCI and the 30 grain Hornady V-Max both did very good at 50yds. I have three more different brands of ammo coming next week so Ill give them a try when they get here. Both these groups are 5 shots at 50 yds.

Just an FYI I bought that carton of bullets at Walmart for $29.95 plus tax. A bunch cheaper than what I saw it for on line. I may buy more just to have.

If you shoot a .22mag @ 50 yards it'll make you think it's great. Stretch it out to 100 or more and it'll drive you crazy, or such has been my experience.

I had a factory SS bull barrel Savage that liked CCI Maxi Mags but it was still over an inch @ 100 yards.

I decided the price and availability of ammunition wasn't worth it and sold it.

Also had a Win lever action in .22 Mag. Even with a scope it disappointed me too often and I sold it also.

I have no plans to own any more.

I know this is an old post but just updating. I tried some 50 grain stuff and at 50 and 100 id was MEH. The 30 grain Vmax shot great at 50 and somewhere around an inch at 100yds. Think that is what I will stock up on and call it good.

I have a Ruger laminated stock with the gray medium contour barrel that has been glass bedded and the trigger lightened that would consistently shoot 1/2” 5 shot groups years ago with ONLY the 30 gr bullets. VMAX and Sierra HP’s. No 40 gr or 50 gr bullet would come close to the same level of accuracy. 4-12X40 Leupold. These were 100 yard groups

I have had owned several 22 magnum rifles, CZ, Marlin and Savage. All were bedded, free floated, and trigger work. I even weight sorted ammo but it was a wasted effort. I could never get the accuracy at 100 yards.

I have a Tikka T1X in 17 HMR and I will have to say it is a very good shooter.

My Savage Anschutz really shines at 50yds with the 30 gain V-Max and does very good until the wind starts blowing. All bets are off after that. I'd probably still hit what I was shooting at but probably not where I was aiming.

I have an older Ruger 77/22 mag VBZ. I only ever tried Win Super X 40's. At 100 yards usual average is 1.25" for 10 shot groups, some smaller and some slightly bigger...50 yds is averaging .5". I have one of the "good" ones as it needed no extra work besides a lighter trigger. I have all 3 version of the VBZ 22lr, 22 mag, and 22 Hornet. All of them shoot great. Especially the 22 Hornet.

The internet and gunshops are full of guys with 22 magnums that shoot one hole at 100 yards, but you know how that goes. I've owned Anschutz, CZ, Kimber, and a pile of others in 22 WMR and I'm generally thrilled with a rifle that will average 1 1/2" at 100 yards. I've actually found very few that will do that. That's "average", not that fluke group that we all like to get and carry around in our wallets.
That has been my experience as well. I've never been fortunate enough to own a super-accurate .22 Magnum. This is one rimfire caliber that seems to benefit the most from trying different ammo. Can go from pretty bad or so-so to not too bad.

The .22mags I've used hav'nt been tack drivers, but they're ment for killing. The fed 50grn is what the portable slaughter trucks prefer. I've gone away from light and of course no lead, preferring 40grn SP and HP, have you tried pmc or feocci? Anytime I ran across new ammo I would try......wish I had bought 10k of win supreme 34gr, great in most of the rifles I had.

My 22 mag testing was done many years ago. There was no Hornaday back then or none that i knew of. Federal was second, Winchester was third. And out of the realm of my imagination was Armscor Precision. The machinery was old Winchester cause the head stamp was H for Tyler Henry. They had a half jacket with exposed lead like a pistol bullet and they were way better than anything else I tried. I've got some of the Winchester 22 mag now that splits about every other case, They will not answer the phone to make good on their junk. I need to buy some of the current Armscor 22 mag ammo and see if its still good.
