22 LR for match shooting

DennisH

Life Time NRA member
Never tried this before,

Need a recommendation for a 22lr. Will be shooting 100yd matches, similiar to F-class, just 22lr!

Just looking for a good match 22lr., need opinions

Will set the gun up just like the big boy F-Class guns! Light trigger, match barrel, etc.

The Sako Quad with the Manners stock and Jewell trigger and aftremarket barrel may interest you. If cost was a factor, I would go with the Savage TR.

Much like an F-class gun is a lot like a prone rifle, modified with bipod/bag riding stuff, a starting point for a smallbore f-class gun could be a smallbore prone gun.

If you've already got an F-class rifle, I'd suggest getting an Anschutz action, and sticking it in a stock as close to your F-class one as you can find. If you don't have one already, find a decent smallbore gun and have at it.

I don't know a thing about rimfire benchrest, but I would imagine that that would be another style of gun that may well be a good fit for smallbore f-class.

Personally, if I were to shoot such a match, I'd grab my smallbore prone gun (CSS AN-1) and slap some bag riding attachments on it, and expect the gun to work very well.

I shoot a Kimber 82G in a similar match in Mississippi. I think they were a real steal from the CMP! Some folks use Savages while others use 40x's, Anschutz, etc.... The biggest thing is to get on the line and try it!

There's even a couple of full customs that shoot with us!

Not sure if the Cooper TRP-3 will fit the class although if it does, it's a excellent piece considering what you get for the money.

Would like to find one with an adjustable trigger to get into the low oz's!

2 to 4 oz's would be perfect for me!

DennisH,
How serious do you want to get in terms of price? That might help some give you an honest opinion. I shoot local club shoots for competition and shoot an Anschutz 64MPR (MUlti-Purpose-) that is a repeater. Now that one cost me $1150 about a year and a half ago and was a move up from a couple of Savage I bought earlier ($400 each). An Anschutz, whether 54 Match action or 64 Action (which mine is) has a very very nice adjustable trigger and gets me usually a 1st, 2nd or sometimes 3rd place, and the latter happens when the guys with the Hall Action/Jewell trigger, Turbo Action/Jewell Trigger or Remington 40X/Jewell trigger, all with Lilja, Shilen, Broughton, etc barrels, the rigs that usually start at $3500 before adding glass. Now I did splurg with the glass this time and bought a Leupold Competition 35X that the serious guys use in competition for the typical 50 yd shots or even the 75 - 100 yd group. Guess it all depends on how much you want to spend. If you decide you want to go custom, give me a hollar and I'll turn you on to a great builder who has extensive experience in testing Anschutz rifles and builds the serious contender rigs, as well as writes article regarding Rimfire Rifles in "Precision Shooting" magazines.

I thought I seen on this site that CZ was making one complete with stock (manners) adj trigger etc for $799. it was at the "shot show"..looked really good Model 455 Varmint Precision Trainer its on the CZ-USA.com? worth a check..~Danny

BenchRestCentral has 30 RF rifles for sale in the classifieds at this time. From mild to FULL TILT you should check them out.......

I use a 40X with a Lilja 4 groove, 16 twist tight-bore. The stock is an Accuracy International AICS-X and the scope is a S&B 5-25. A close to perfect clone of my AIAW-X in 243. Only the trigger is different, the 40X has a Jewell HVR. AIs have a two stage.

Below was taken at the Olympic Training Center yesterday. That is 60 shots inside (1cm) 3/8 of an inch. Shot 58 is the one at 7:00 below the 9.

Just to let everyone know, I am reading the post! I didn't know 2lr's could get so expensive!!!!

I am looking at the anshultz rifles, This might be a starting point for me!

Any "exact" recommendations?

MT Guns may have something that may meet your needs. I've seen Mac's inventory of smallbore rifles and you may be able to get in at a lower price point. Maybe a bbl'd action w/trigger and stock it your self.
Good place to do business with!

DennisH,
As you have apparently found out, this rimfire craze has opened the doors for rimfire manufacturers to make some serious coin. And yes the price of a rimfire rifle has taken off because good rimfire ammunition isn't cheap by any means. What price does is determins the consistency of the ammo you buy. If you buy the $3.00 a box stuff, that does disservice to some fine equipment. In fact, Wolf ammo that is somewhere in the mid to upper range of accuracy in some rifles costs between $5.50 - $7.00 a box of 50. Then you get more up into the Match Grade stuff and you are having to pay between $9.50 to 12.50 a box. Then the upper tier of Match Ammo get to be anywhere from $15.50 (My best ammo I use) - $20 a box. And if you have a true Match Grade Rifle, practicing isn't even cheap because IMHO, it does a shooter no good to practice with ammo that will not perform up to Match Caliber. Hell I shoot with a couple of guys who have gotten too old to compete (eyesight and the such going south) and their custom rigs without a scope costs them $4500+ and that was a few years ago before every brother started buying RImfire because Centerfire ammo got so darn expensive to shoot. (Sorry for the long windedness).

But like I said in my earlier post, what are your goals with a Rimfire whether it be for fun (which I do and a little of competing) or are your serious and want to put invest into a Rimfire Rifle that will compete with the big boys? If your fancy strikes the serious line, get your wallt out because youi'll be spending some really serious money more into the $3000+ cataegory. If you are on the more serious side of shooting and Anschutz warms the coddles of your heart, make sure you get AT LEAST an Anschutz model with the "54 Action." Mine has the 64 Action which is not quite as versatille and more toward the upper tier Match Grade shooters. That is not to say the 64 Action won't perform well because they will. In fact, I honestly believe either the 54 or the 64 will outperform most folks behind the trigger. In other words, the reason why the targets aren't showing one hole after 10 shoots is because the person pulling the trigger isn't as good as he or she thinks they are. And that is not a comment intended to demean anyone. There is no magic formula other than proper form, regiment in setting up and delivery the shot with true consistency each and everyutime you pull the trigger. And no matter how much you preach that to people, most want others to believe they can hit the tailbone of a fly at a 1000 yds with any firearm ever produced. And trust me, you ought to see some of the 50 yd targets of folks with the life sized flies on them that they have to shoot in some competitions and have just one shot per fly on a target of 20 flies. It is a humbling experience to say the least. But I can also guarantee if you can shoot, that 54 or 64 action will deliver when the shooter does his part.

Lastly, if you haven't already done so and you want to see some reasonable Anschutz prices, might I suggest you go to www.championshooters.com and click on Anschutz because they have several nice models to choose from. Part of the success of obtaining a rifle is finding a dealer who has one. Good luck and have fun whichever way you decide to go.

As Shynloco stated, look at the Anschutz 64 MPR which comes with a match trigger and a 26" barrel. It has a heavy BR-type of stock, and comes without sights. Anschutz makes superb iron sights, or you can get an Anschutz 11mm rail to mount a scope. Your choice.

Go to Champion Shooters Supply website for info on most Anschutz rifles. They're located in Ohio.

Roger, Is the gun still for sale?
He bought it from MT Guns . Check their web site I believe they have them listed......but I haven't looked lately.

As Shynloco said, most guns will outshoot the shooter. That's an UNDERSTEMENT. I thought I pulled a fair trigger in centerfire rigs ,picked up a Voelker smith-ed Rem 22 and had to RELEARN pulling the trigger (no joke)..Rest/bag setup is also (seems) more critical (I believe this has to do with a longer bbl time with Match ammo and the harmonics that go with that). I REALLY ENJOY the frustrations associated with the 22's (TWISTED isn't it) but the lack of recoil and noise is TRUELY a pleasure. One more thing you don't need to REPLACE a BBL every 4-600 rds like centerfire.
