22 K-Hornet???

Has anyone built a "tack driving" 22 K-Hornet? I've heard its a waste of money as the K-Hornet just isn't that accurate of a round. I have a new version Ruger 77/22 Hornet and the barrel is screwed into the receiver instead of the wedge like on the older ones. Mine shoots pretty good but there's always room for improvement. Just rainy day thoughts!

I’d say it’s slightly more accurate then a regular 22 hornet. The real benefit is head spacing on the shoulder vastly improves case life and you gain a little velocity with the increased case volume. I routinely shoot 3/4” at 100 yds with 40 gr Nosler b-tips and lil gun. A Remington 6 1/2 primer seems to help accuracy too.

My best groups are with a 40 grain Sierra and LilGun, also a 6 1/2 primer. Mines already a K. I did it before it had 20 rounds through it.

Try a case full of 1680 or CFE BLK. You will get about 2950 fps and great accuracy if your experience mirrors mine. K-Hornet definitely better than regular Hornet IMO. Good luck with it, fun little round.

Not my build, but is new to me, honestly it probably predates me. Have a load that might drive tacks, if I could see them. Needed a 3" dot at 50 yards before putting a globe sight on, still need a 2".

15.2 1680, 40 grain VMax.

If ya want that Ruger to shoot send it to Randy at Connecticut precision chambering. $200 for the works. My R77 was a toad til I sent it to Randy. He knows how to fix Rugers.

Hey 'Zilla, what kinda groups and velocity you be getting?

I am very old and can't remember ****. I haven't shot that rifle in quite a while. But before I sent it off it was horrible. All over the place. After it was worked over by Randy as I recall ~3/4" or maybe less. I use it to cull prairie dogs. Lil Gun and 40 Vmax. He cut a match chamber, crowned the muzzle and fixed the bolt shims.

Thanks Zilla. This memory thing rears its head daily for me.......and to think, then yrs from now these will be "The good old days." :) I just hope I'm here to remember them.

Mine actually shoots really well. I watched a video by "Cavedweller" on Youtube and followed what he did. I used a Mcarbo trigger spring and bolt shim kit, bedded the action and floated the barrel. On a good day I can get 1/2 inch groups at 100yds. That may be as good as one could expect from a Hornet. The 40 grain Sierra's really shoot good in my rifle. The trigger, even with the spring kit could be better but its not bad, just could be better.

22 K Hornets can shoot. Had a Cooper that consistently shot 3 shot high two and low three's with flags. I am so stupid for selling it!!! Think I used 40gr sierras. Can't remember the powder. But I ran it hot.

Well that did it. Took the ol Hornet out today with some loads I made up quite a while ago. 33 gr Speers with a huge hollow point and H110. Flat ruins a prairie dawg..

I'm guessing there's only a few people in the world who had a Winchester 54 rebarreled in 22 K-Hornet in the last decade or so, and I'm one of them. Admittedly, I have not worked up a load, but when fireforming brass it stayed under 1 MOA.

I started to change to K, but someone tried Lil Gun in a Hornet, and saved me from myself.
At around 3100fps, who needs K? Results will vary!

I have a cadet martini rebarreled to k hornet. It is sub moa with Winchester factory ammo. I have never reloaded for it, but I will soon.

A well done K is definitely better. With 40 grain Sierra blitz kings, it is easy to kill PD's out to 200 consistently. Under 1/2 for 5 at 100. Brass lasts way better than the hornet.
Lil-gun powder.
