22 Hornet

I have a bunch of Hornady factory ammo brass. After firing I have tried to pop the primer and the flash hole is too small. I have tried 2 different sized decapping pins. One does nothing but hit the brass and stops. The other (smaller diameter) will pop the primer but you have to force it. Then the pin gets stuck in the flash hole. Any ran into this?

Like just be small flash holes, it would be worth measuring the pin diameter.

It also worth getting a light and looking down into the case and checking to make sure the flash hole is clear. Kind of tough with a small bullet, but worth it. It’s another good reason to have a bore scope. I didn’t at the time.

I learned the hard way that you need to at least check, but better to fully prep new brass. This was a few years ago with Winchester brass that some of the flash holes were only about 80% open.

This will fix it. The toughest decap die ive ever seen. Never broke a pin. Even enlarges some flash holes with it. Pins wont come off. Order the small pins with it also, only takes seconds to change pins

From ** MY ** notes:

Most foreign and many American manufacturers of .22 Hornet brass have small flash holes and use .062” decapping pins, e.g., Hornady (Small .060” #396618), PPU, Sellier & Bellot, etc. Remington brass has Standard American flash holes size of .080” and use large decapping pins (Hornady Large .070” #390222). DO NOT USE Hornady Small-Headed .060” #396326. Nosler .22 Hornet brass is typically around .070 inches, which allows for a comfortable clearance with standard decapping pins used in resizing dies.
