Savage 25 22 Hornet..

TheOtherZilla

Pull my finger
For years I have wanted to get a 22 Hornet. I shot a few years ago and loved em. The ones I shot were extremely accurate and fun. Now I have the new gun urge again and have been looking at Hornets. CZ makes a nice rifle and I see Savage makes a hornet in a mod 25. I am interested in the Savge. Anyone here have one [Savage]? Likes/disikes?

People that have bought the Savage 25's have been very disappointed. Browse some of the other forums. Save your money and get the CZ.

I have the Savage 25 walking varminter in 22 Hornet which has the plastic stock. I finally found a load that shoots very well and I think I got lucky with this rifle as CatShooter has said some have had some problems with theirs. If your thinking about the Savage I would recommend the 25 with the wood stock at least then you can do some bedding work if needed. Again I feel very fortunate that my Savage shoots well. As CatShooter has said I would also recommend the CZ which I own in other calibers and are generally good shooters right out of the box. I will say the 22 Hornet is a very fun little cartridge that I enjoy shooting many times more than my bench rifles. :D

I dropped the hammer. The LGS had a new Ruger for less than $600. It is nicely made and feels good. Just couldn't help myself.. Hopefully it will shoot good. After reading up on the Ruger 22 Hornets I am wondering if I made the right choice.. But I like to tinker with my rifles so I may get my chance.. If not I can always sell it.
This weekend I'll give er a go and see what I have..

I have a couple hornets. A 77/22 hornet and a CZ 527. I like them both, but the CZ shot much better until some work the Ruger. The CZ is hard to beat !!

The mod.40 was disc. but there some still around they stop production when they built the mod 25 there cheap but they shoot fine.Never shot a CZ hornet but the two ruger I had was junk!!!!!!!!!!!! varmint mod and sporter model this mod 40 I have now will shoot bug holes at 100yds w/Litgun powder 40gr bergers 450m primers

I have a Savage model 40 in 22 Hornet and I am pleased with, it shoots most of my hand loads loads well. I shoot 35 and 40 gr. bullets.

I HAVE BOTH THE SAVAGE MODEL 40 & 25... I have chambered them both to the "K-Hornet" both are tack drivers... I use 14.5 gr Lilgun on the Hornady 35 & 40 gr V-max/40 gr Zmax... No signs of exceed casing pressure & they just explode the gophers, skin & guts them in one shot...

Bet you can't just shoot one....

P.S. I'll sell one of them if anybody wants it...

I've owned several 22 Hornets. But I now own one…a Ruger #1 and it is a real tack driver. The reason is (with a single shot) I can finally set the bullets used out far enough to attain the kind of accuracy the Hornet is capable of. If you can't go this route…go with the CZ and if you look around on the internet you will find info on modifying the magazine to accept longer seated bullets. May I suggest an alternative CZ that you will absolutely love that eliminates the desire for a 17 caliber, 22Hornet or 218 Bee? Get one in 221 Fireball…you will be amazed!

I own a cz and my buddy also owns one. Both 22hornets. They both consistently shoot 5/8 inch 5 shot groups @100. I really appreciate the single set trigger in the cz 527 as well. Another friend of mine had a river and never could get the thing to shoot. He is a knowledgable handloader and gun tinkerer. He finally concluded later that a common problem with the rugers is excess headspace. Bolt face and barrel gap was too large for the rim on the hornet case as I understand it. He also told me that he rechambered another ruger suffering the same problem to a k-hornet which solves the problem. I would have to agree with a previous post that the 221 fireball would have been a better choice for me. That little cartridge is capable of performance one would not expect from such a diminutive cartridge. The 221 will helicopter sage rats here in oregon more often and higher than a hornet.

Be'n as ornery as I am I have finally sent my Ruger out to have a match chamber cut and a target crown as well. Trigger job too.. Wish I coulda found a Browning or a CZ...
