I also have a Model 40. I bought it even though the reviews were not all that good. The fit and finish on my particular model 40 is exceptional and reminds me more of a higher end rifle. Those that bad talked the little rifle may have been trying to magnumize it. I would have even favored a Krag style locking lug rather than a 22RF. It is what it is and shoots over and above the price point.
I had it for about five years, then traded it off for a CZ 527, I thought I was trading up. Long story short the 1-16 twist CZ, others can have my share of them. I did not want to shoot the little stubby original Hornet bullets, jacketed or cast.
Got lucky and got my Model 40 back and all is well again. It is a pleasure to shoot and play with. A 40 grain cast bullet and SR4756, runs about 1050FPS and shoots exceptionally well.
It will run 40 grain Vmax into the smaller side of 1”@100 easily.
I really wish Savage would up date their thoughts on the “Classics” they had some years back in their full size rifles. Little bolt guns in 25-20 and 32-20 dressed in their classic style I think would be hot items. I think even another 22Hornet offering along with 218 Bee would sell well to many folks.
