22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer

Reminds me of Fredo's 220 Redline. For those not familiar, there remains a great thread on it here on AS, and follow-up article on Coyotestuff.com. It was pushing a 70 grain in the 4100 area and I watched it roll a chuck sideways three revolutions. Gosh I miss Fredo!

Howdy !

+1 on missing Fredo’s posts, here.

I had one built about 35 years ago on a Savage SS action. The article appeared in a Precision Shooting Magazine acticle written by Gene Solyntjes. The only bullet that held up (5600fps) was the old Nosler Zipedo (60gr?). 200 rounds and the Savage factory barrel was toast. There was a lot of noise about the Cryogenics barrel treatment out of Texas. Carl Hildebrandt was the ballistics head guru at Savage and he sent me a Single Shot rifle in 22-250 and a spare barrel. I shot both barrels for velocity and accuracy, and sent the worst one to Cryogenics. It did pick up about 100fps MV, but did not shoot any better.

The original project was commissioned by NASA about 1956 or so. They were developing meteorite shielding. They provided a couple meteorites, and someone was able to melt them and cast 22 caliber round balls for testing. IIRC, the maxed out at just over 7000fps.

The next spring I was sitting at Hodgdon's table at a SHOT Show dinner next to Carl. We got to talking about high velocity rifle rounds. I mentioned my 22 EarGesplitten Loudenboomer, and some young engineer questioned (politely) my project. (every now and then I make history with my big mouth.) I hit a grand slam, I had a loaded round I had made for Carl. I pulled it out of my jacket pocket and handed it to the young man. His eyes glazed over.

ISS

PS: I have a case sitting here on my desk as I type.
