22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer

Back in the late 70's I sold off my 350 Rem Mag brass to a fella doing
a .22 cat. Had to use a bullet made by Barnes, since it was the only one
that did not blow up beyond 4000 fps. I wonder where that went to ??
he was in his 60's when he built it.

Anyone familiar with this caliber?

Howdy !

I think Hutton was ultimately trying to see at what point significant increases in powder charge did not result in useful velocity gains.

Ballistician Homer Powley said in his “Powley Computer “ usersp’s manual,
that rifle “ expansion ratio “ is usually no less than 5, while some anti-aircraft guns had been made with expansion ratios as low as 4. In .224” cal and given a 28” barrel length,
a notional powder charge of around 72gr would yield a rifle expansion ratio of 4.
The “ Eargesplittin’ Loudenboomer “ data listed shows charges 30 -36gr PAST what it takes to get an in-efficient expansion ratio of 4.

Hodgdon’s load data shows that for a notional .224” cal 50 grain bullet, there are already existing cartridges that can put 4,100fps on a 50gr .224” cal together bullet…. allowed enough barrel length. A .223WSSM could do it, given a 26” barrel. The .22 Cheetah MkII is another example. They list at least one load for a 24” .220 Swift that gave 4,100fps. And there are other known cartridges that can generate that velocity level, again…. given enough barrel length.

My point:
As novel or promising putting such a large charge behind a small calibre bullet might seem, in-actuality… it is a false promise. You’d be burning that extra powder for little else than eroding the barrel @ an alarming rate.

If anyone has access to the 1958 Gun Digest, (mine is in storage), you can see a picture of a 50 BMG necked down to .17 caliber, claimed to fire a 25-grain bullet @ 6125 fps. I don't remember a charge weight or powder but I thought it interesting!

Reminds me of Fredo's 220 Redline. For those not familiar, there remains a great thread on it here on AS, and follow-up article on Coyotestuff.com. It was pushing a 70 grain in the 4100 area and I watched it roll a chuck sideways three revolutions. Gosh I miss Fredo!
