22 Dasher

Hello guys, planning to build a new rifle sons just trying to decide on a cartridge very interested in the 22 Dasher seems like it has the speed and the accuracy to get the job done. Its main role will be for varmints and critters up to 600 yards and some range time here and there just wondering your thoughts pros and cons or any other recommendations you might have.

Sounds like a perfect candidate for a 12 twist and the 53 V-Max
Of course some would say make it a super fast twist and go all the way to 90s.If I was building this rifle I think I would use a 9 twist for 53s on up to 69-75s

Out to 600 you will want an 8 twist and shoot the 75 grain class of bullets. Start with H4350, CCI 450, and 75 grn ELD-M's. Most likely you will not have to move on from that combo.

There are pros and cons with the 22 Dasher, the main one being the fact that it's fully capable of pushing 80s fast yet offering the same to the 53gr Vmax. That leaves you with a decision, fast or slow.
If you go with an 8t, you'll be able to still push the 53s @ 4200+, but the centrifugal force overtakes velocity around 700yds, then it careens off into the wild blue yonder.

If you go with a 12t, you'll short yourself with the use of heavies, but extend the 53gr Vmax range another 200yd with decent accuracy.

I'm rolling with an 8t and keeping shots under 750yds and the 22 Dasher is the best varmint cartridge I've seen, period.

Thanks for the input guy it sounds like the 8 twist is the way to go because it has the horsepower to push the heavier bullets. Does anybody have an idea of round count before the barrel go south

I'm at nearly 1k with about .03" throat movement but no accuracy loss.

THE 22 DASHER IS A FINE ROUND I LOVE TO SHOOT MINE ITS A 8TW AND IT LOVES N-135 AND 75GR BERGERS OVER 450 PRIMERS 600 TO 700 YDS WON'T BE A PROBLEM !:D:D

Just got mine up and running. So far it is going well. 8T shooting Hornady ELD 80gr with 4350 450CCI. It is a dream to shoot. Can't wait to complete load development and stretch it out to 600

A couple of questions. 1. With 80 grain projectiles, what was your starting load of H4350? And 2. Where/How did you make/source the 22 Dasher Dies?

My smith here in Oz has the reamer and can make a Wilson Seater from a 22 cal blank, but what about the FL Sizer. I shoot a 6 Dasher and was able to make a 22 Dasher dummy by simply putting a 22 bushing in my 6 Dasher F/L Harrel Sizer. The smith was able to chamber the dummy round in his personal 22 Dasher rifle.

My smith actually gave up on the 22 Dasher and has reverted to the good old 22 BR.

We use these rifles for the 500 metre Fly Shoot.

Experience and comments from USA 22 Dasher shooters would be very much appreciated.

PS: I have a scanned copy of the original article from February 1999 Precision Shooting on the Dasher Project

My starting load was 34.0 .003 off. After the first test hits I came .010 off and settled on 34.5 with great groups. FPS 3163 no pressure at all. This is as far as I have got. Norma dasher. I only use Whidden dies. I had the seater made from reamer print. I use my 6 Norma dasher sizing die and use a .247 bushing. Take the 6mm mandrel off. Works great. Reamer from PT&G. As soon as I got to 35.0 grps opened up. Going to try varget and swap over to burgers.
