22 CreedMoor what bullet for Prairie Dogs

You shoot what is accurate. The $$$$ spent on the whole trip, I refuse to let a few more dollars in bullets get in the way. Even if it did I would eat crackers and cheese and ramen. Now if you can make “cheap” stuff do what YOU want, that is fine. I know some holler about ricochets, I totally get it. But if I know there are no critters or people around, I will let loose with some.
I shoot several rigs that I just like to play with to check on numerous things.
Have fun is the bottom line.

Once you get the wind figured out, let the fun begin
That's the frustrating thing about wind, you never really have it figured out. Isaac Newton is a friend to the shooting world and helped us understand gravity but I'm convinced Mother Nature is no friend to us and likes playing games with the wind and just about the time you get all dialed in she throws us a curve ball and kicks our ass.

Depends on twist of barrel & wind I would bring a 204 or :22 & a 6 mm caliber along .

I shoot on private ranches in a nearby state usually in the spring. The original owner has passed but his son has taken over the entire operation. He has assured me that I can shoot as often and as much as I want.

I shoot for the highest percentage of kills not the volume of shots made. There have been days of 50-60 shots unlike the shooters using 200-300 shots. Because of the prevailing wind, I have graduated to the heavier, higher BC bullets especially in the .22 Creedmoor. My 'normal' bullet is the 75 gr. AMAX which I bought in large quantity before Hornady stopped making them. As the wind comes up and the distances increase I switch to the 90 gr. A-TIPS now. This will take me to the boundary lines on most fields.

Here is a quote from one of my posts 5 years ago on this topic:

It took me one trip shooting prairie dogs to figure out which firearms I was going to take the next time. I usually try to get out right after the pups make their first journey up into the sunlight. If I'm careful, I can get in a couple of hours of .22LR pistol and rifle shooting out to about 50 yards. After that I switch to a shooting table and spotting scope for the .204 Ruger, .223 Rem. and the .17 Mach IV. When they retreat further out I use the .22 Creedmoor, .22-250 but for those wily little guys in the further reaches of the field I unlimber the .240 Weatherby!:D

Somewhere towards the end of the second or third day I like to relax and call in the long range artillery. For this part of the shooting I have to have a spotter because the recoil is significantly more than the other rifles. I let the field settle down and get quiet while I unload the .416 Rigby, the .510 Wells Express and the .375 CheyTac. The .416 and .510 are held in reserve for those shots at the far end of the field where we call in the shots like artillery. One or two shots for ranging and if they aren't underground they better be running fast! Three on a mound? No problem, I can take out the whole mound with one shot. The .375 CheyTac turns the entire furthest reaches of any field into chip shots for those evil creepers who figured they were out of range! No quarter, no mercy!

I do let the rancher know when the big guns come out as he really enjoys getting behind them for a couple of shots. ;)

No matter your desires or choices, pick what works and enjoy the days out in the open!

:)

IMO, the 50- 53 grain, V-maxes and 50- 55 gr. NBT's,.. pretty much RULE, the Prairies / Deserts, for "explosiveness" and accuracy on, the Smallish Varmints OUT to,.. as far as, you can,.. Hit One.
Gimmee a GOOD / Accurate,.. .22 Cal. Rifle !

Wonder how far out the 53 v max has enough energy to kill a coyote? Maybe 400 ?
YUP,. Probably out to,.. 400-450 ish with, a good,.. "Hit"
I've killed a couple with .22 Magnums at 115 & 150 yds ,. But they were, a bit, SLOW, Dying !
Both walked over, a Hill and Laid down for, a "Rest",.. permanently.
Never used, the .22 Win Mag for anything Bigger than, a Sage Rat,.. after those 2, experiences !

Ok thanks that’s what I was thinking 400 450 has to be a good hit and not a strong wind .
