.22 Creedmoor Shooters

starting my build and have decided on this caliber. I believe it will gain a true following like it's big brothers. Dies, brass are coming out now, powders and GREAT bullets are already here.

To those who OWN and SHOOT this round. What barrel length and twist do you recommend? I will run a suppressor and "may" shoot the 90gr bullets but this is not a MUST.

Gun will be used for prairie dogs and plinking long range steel. Probably pop a hog or 10.

An 8 twist will serve you well in that bigger .224 case round. Even moving the 90s although I think you'll be happier with the 75/80 weight class bullets. You'll get around 3500+ fps with both and you won't think about the 90s when you see what the 80s can do Waaaay out there. Good luck.

I've got a Brux 1:8 twist at 24 inches and couldn't be happier with it. I've been doing load development primarily with Hornady 88 grain ELDs and H4831sc. using Alpha brass, Whidden sizer and a Forster .22-250 Ultra micrometer seater that had a .22 Creedmoor reamer run into it to recut the shoulder. Everything is working great.

My 22 Creedmoor with a 28" 1:8 barrel really likes the 80 gr. Nosler CC. Shooting tiny groups right from the get go with H-4350. Saw no reason to try anything else.

Redding dies are here, Alpha SRP brass and Fed 205's on the way. Most required powders and bullets on hand.

Where do most bullets feel comfortable from the lands?


I'd like to have some rounds loaded when the rifle is ready in April. Is this wise? or should I just wait and measure when it gets here?

I'd wait and measure when you have rifle in hand but that's just me. If you are really impatient you could load up some test rounds, seat them long and then when the rfle arrives you could measure and and then adjust seating depth.

anyone necking down lapua brass? Curious on process. plan to use my 6mm creed dies with .251 bushing.... not sure if one step will work or if i'll have to partial size with .261 then go down to .251

Seeing as I have more time then money...I did mine in 2 steps. When forming cases, I try to keep it to .010 as max sizing down per step. I use Lapua for my 22 Creedmoor. I always do a skim turning of the necks before I start downsizing. When I did my first wildcat I created many donuts as the Lapua brass is already quite thick. So, now I just do the skim turning first and never get any donuts. I suppose you could do it on one pass. Try it!

I'm going to try one pass.... i used Lapua .284 brass for my 6mm-284 and was able to neck down in a single pass. However, with this stuff, rarely do things ever go as planned, so i'll give it a try with single and if it doesn't work i'll buy a .261 bushing.

I use Lapua 222 and 22-250 for both my 20-222 and 20-250, I neck both down using Redding bushing dies in one single pass and all has been good. Not sure I'd try and go any further in a single pass, but so far, dropping down .20 thou in one pass is working fine.

My process, I run all the brass through a K&M mandrel to make the necks perfectly round, chamfer the outside of the neck, then run it through the bushing die to neck them down.

I think he meant Lapua 6.5-284 brass, not sure Lapua ever made just straight .284 brass.

Lapua 6.5-284 brass is what I use in my 6-284. Years ago all I had was a Redding FL 6-284 die, it was an easy one pass and load.

Yes B23 you are correct I used lapua 6.5-284. Super easy. Have some standard 284 brass I’ve not yet tried to neck down, it’s not lapua so not sure I’ll ever need to anyway!

I run the Lapua brass and neck it down in 4 or 5 steps to reduce the stress on the brass and have yet to see a doughnut, as opposed to a buddy who does the 6cm in 1 step and is getting doughnuts after about 5 firings in Hornady brass. I tried necking down 6.5 in 2 steps and 6 in 1 step and was never really happy with how it turned out. I have been running this cartridge for 3 yrs and it is by far my favorite round for coyotes, pigs and white tails. In my group, 4 out of 6 of us shoot a 22cm, the 5th guy runs a 22x47L and #6 is a weird cat with a 22 dasher. Three of the 22cm guys are running the 69tmk with 39.0 of varget at 3595 froma 24" 8tw and 3510 from a 22" 8tw and 3500 from a 20" 8tw. The Dasher guy runs the 88eldm and is racking up some nice kills. I run whidden f/l bushing dies, the 80.5 berger, 42.2gn of H4350 & cci450's from Lapua brass for 3393fps from a 22"8tw with an sd of 6. It knocks the stuffing out of coyotes and isn't horrible on fur, but the insides are soup.

We have found that the Alpha brass showed pressure spikes well before the Lapua brass and just wouldn't give the velocity normally found with added pressure. Lapua has been, hands down, the best brass option we have found. There are guys running the 90+ bullets from 7.5tw and showing excellent results, but mine is a critter gitter and the 80.5 fullbores are bada&& on everything that I have shot with them. The Hornady 88gn ELDM's are killing very well also, from a local state coyote hunter. The 80.5 are easy to tune and have no qualms about a jump. Once you get it up and running, you will grab it more often than not for a good time.

Huck would you be willing to share your load with the 80.5? That’s what I’m going to move forward with. I was able to size down lapua 6 creed with one pass just fine using a .252 bushing. I did also use a 22 cal tapered expander. First round of loads with H4350 showed promise at 41.0 grains 2.600” oal, but I feel it could tighten up. Shooting a 22” Wilson barrel 8twist

Good deal - that's what powder i was using, still breaking in the barrel. I got a good node around 41.0 with it.

That is indeed a good spot to get a new bbl up and running. When I first got the gun built, rounds # 3,4 and 5 were loaded at 41.0 and went into about 0.5".
