22 BR or 6 BR ????

I can't decide which one to have built for shooting P-Dogs at 500yds or less.. Help me decide..

I have both and like them but would also choose the 6BR. No necking down and it shoots 55's and 58's about as fast as the 22BR shoots 50's. Use a chamber with 0 freebore in a 14" twist barrel.

Get "both"! I've got 2 of each. One pass of a 6 BR case through a 22 BR full length die and you're done. Both shoot bug holes. The 22 BR is a little tricky as far as working up loads. Take your time and you'll be rewarded with one hole groups. ;D

Ive also have both, Ive had the 6BR longer than the 22BR, and like them both. But if I could only have one, it would be the 6BR.

In '87 or '88 a friend and I had 22BR's done. Both with the same reamer. First powder tried was RL15 and groups were so small there was never any reason to look further. It was just stupid easy to make that cartridge shoot. That load was a 50Blitz @ 3815. New lot of same powder, 50BK@3700-3850, tiny groups. Accurate also with 748, 2230, VV133...... I haven't found a powder that doesn't shoot well in this cartridge. Rem. 40X with rechambered 27" barrel, .243" nk. A great rifle but seldom used anymore.

The 6BR is Sako AII with 24" Hart......55BT and 58VMax shoot little ragged groups at 3850-3920 with AA2230 powder. This one gets used fairly regular.

Both excellent ctgs, but I would give a slight edge to the 6BR. Did have some pressure problems when approaching max loads in the 22BR. Pressure signs did not come on gradually. At 28.5 grs. all was normal. Increase to 28.8 and very hard bolt lift and ugly primers. Still a great round and prefer it over my 22-250, if for no other reasons than greater accuracy and longer barrel life. Why not build a switch-barrel and have both?

Both are great. Thr 6BR will have better barrel life. With a 12 tw barrel you can run up to 80gr bullets. I like the 12 tw and 70gr Sierria Blitzkings. A friend has kills out past 900yds on PD with this combo. I have kills on VA groundhogs past 600 yds.

Both Lapua and Norma make the 6BR brass as well as Remington but Remington would be my "last" choice. Norma costs more then the Lapua brass but both are good to work with. I think Lapua is the best.
Nobody "that I know of " (Lapua/Norma) makes 22 BR brass. Neck the 6BR down to 22 BR and you're set.

I can't amagine not having both, I have two 6br's one is a 26" HV Hart 14tw and will stabilize the 75Vmax's, the other a 28" #7 Pacnor 8tw shooting Berger 88 FB. My 22br weighs 17lb plus scope, with a 1.300 dia full bull 14tw 29" Shilen in a Richard Franklin MBR walnut stock and loves 29.0gr/H4895 pushing a 60gr Vmax and it give up very little to my 6br's. In fact I'm in the process of building another 22br, a Hart HV @ 22", this will be a long rang pistol on a XP action set up to shoot those fast little 40 grainers. Not sure I'd ever be happy without both calibers. Come to think about it there's always room for for at least one more rifle and I don't yet own a 20br.

IIRC, the Lapua 6BR brass has its flash holes drilled, instead of punched, and didn't they used to have the primers already installed in the cases? I don't know if they still do or not. Also, the wall thickness is relatively constant.

MODERATOR: Lapua flash holes are not drilled. Never have been. Lapua Flash holes are formed with a top punch coming down to meet a bottom punch.

That's true! And im working that little problem. But under some conditions, "bigger is better", like long range, hi wind, so Ill still take the 6BR, if I only had one.

I'm with Ackman on 22br and RL15! 30.5 grns with 50grn Noslers put 5 rounds in one ragged hole!! Thanks for the tip on RL15!

my 6MM BR is a 1/14 Shelin, and it puts a hurt on P-Dogs and squirrels out to about 600. dosent take much to get a good load for it either

Not to change the thread along the same lines though My 22-250 barrel is getting close to replacement. How does the barrel life on the 22BR compare to the 22-250 barrel life ? Thanks D

You said "500 yards or less". There is an even better cartridge for anything up to 500 yards. One that is super accurate, easier on barrels, good brass, easy to load.

You guessed it! A 6PPC with a 12 twist and 70 grain BT bullets. Even a 14 twist will work.

It is so accurate that you'll get bored. :
