New shooter 6MM BR

I am a new bee to the 6mm BR I am just setting up a new rifle most of my shooting will be under 600 yds. I have been trying to decide if I want a 1:12 or 1:8 twist?

I'm 71 years old so I will not be entering any matches just target shooting and varmint hunting.

If out to 300 yards I would go 12 twist. At 600 an 8 twist would be better as it lets you shoot the higher BC bullets up to about 107 grains. They will handle the wind better than the 80 grain flat base that the 12 twist is limited to.

Nobeard,
That is a good username, and welcome to the forum. I shoot competition with guy's a lot older than you so don't count yourself out yet. My son has a Savage that came with a 1:12 I was able to get it to shoot the 85 grain Sierra's in one ragged hole @ 100 yds and shot under a 1/2 moa out past 500 yds I have a Witchita I put a 20" 1:10 hart on it and it shoot's the 95 grain BT bullets real well, I put a 1:8 on my sons 6br savage and reamed it out to 6brx it shoots the 107 Sierra's Awesome. Hope this helps some, good luck with your build and most of all have fun.

Thank you for your input,

I am going to have a 1:8 twist, screwed on the action I have been back and forth a hundred time. I and came to the decision in the last 10 minutes and that is my final answer (I am watching Millionaire) I hope. ???

The 8 twist barrels are shooting 1 inch 5 shot groups at 600 yards in calm winds.it doesn't get much better than that.

Thank you all for your inputs:

I went with a 1:8 twist because I have 2 Savage LRPV for 100 yard too 400 yard shooting already.

Thanks again,
