.22 ammo shortage/price ripoffs

I remember when the Aguila Standard was $185/cs -- a few years ago. Having .22 ammo is like having money in the bank, but the price is going up quicker than the putrid interest banks have been paying. (Because they can borrow money from the Fed for virtually zero; such a deal.)

Like Butch's experience, I've found this stuff to be very accurate (in my Anschutz 1411 anyway). Sure, maybe $19/box stuff would shoot 3/8" at 50y instead of 1/2", but the performance difference vs. the cost isn't worth it to me.

At 25y, it's one-hole stuff, and that's with my crude ability using aperture sights. It's made with the 'Eley' priming system, in case that matters to any of you.

I too feel this pain. I just bought an air gun capable of 1100 fps in lead and 1350 in PBA ammo. It is every bit as fast as most of my .22LR, available and cheap by comparison. I won't quit shooting the win 52's, but this makes the ammo on hand last a little longer. BTW, these are not daisy red riders anymore. Mine barks almost as loud as my .22, and travels a bit faster.

I've been thinking about getting one of those Ruger Air Hawk airguns, but haven't taken the plunge just yet. I think they are a good alternative.

Don't buy from scalpers, and don't hoard. If all of us lived by this, we'd probably see .22lr in volume, back on the shelves.

This is not me. I like how he is trying to get more than double for it. Maybe he thinks a mark 3 is only worth $125.00.

I flagged his link with a comment about this gouger. I hope they post it.

I would suggest that if anyone comes across these gougers links and you have an opportunity to flag it with a comment, you should do so and let the link provider know how this/that person is trying to gouge the public, which reflects on the provider as well.

I also flagged another gouger at this same link, for trying to get $65.00 a brick for Blazer.

Again, if you come across these gougers and you can flag them, do so! They're not offering or providing a service to our shooting sports. They're trying to put the screws to us. Flag their butt's!

I almost hesitate to put this up here because some may think this outfit is a "gouger" because of the price of the ammo. But this is Match Grade stuff and not the cheap junk some are looking for as evidenced in their posts. But here goes anyway.

www.ammunitionstore.com has rimfire ammo (at least their website says they do) in the form of Lapua Midas+ $500 rds $199.99 and Lapua Center X 500 rds for $159.99. This is Match Grade ammo that I use and have used for practice and is far superior to any of Aguila stuff, at least in my Anschutz rifle. My girl doesn't like any of the Eley ammos as I've tried them all as well and just about every other know or obscure rimfire ammo sold in any market over the past 4 yrs. Hope that info helps some looking for decent rimfire ammo.

Alex

P.S> OPS, they also have Lapua SK ammo for considerable less and it shoot relatively well in some rimfire rifles.

What shortage? :o Bought a couple weeks ago. Five were left on the shelf, one box limit. Not for sale, the grandkids are going to shoot them.

Went to a two day gun show in Carlisle Pa. this weekend.Went on Saturday morning. Wife and I went out for breakfast then arrived twenty minutes before the 9:00 opening and there was already a line forming at the door. Well neither one of us wanted to stand in line so we sat in the car and chatted. Doors opened at nine AM sharp and line began to move. We waited till about ten after and as we were walking in a guy was wheeling a cart out. Just inside the door was ez2ctargets.com (great targets by the way) the guy manning the booth said the guy with the cart just bought ALL the 22LR's. That was what he was wheeling out, and this was at 9:10AM!!! Don't know if he was a hoarder, a re-seller, or what, but this is another reason there is a shortage.
It was a nice little show, bought some targets and a couple of small items but that was about it for us.

Saw a nice SCAR FOR $2995.00 Carolyn saw me looking and just raised an eyebrow.........words not needed! LOL!

Went to the same show and don't know if it was the same guy but there was a table with bricks for $50 or $55 and a guy scarfed up all of them. Got there in the middle of his transaction and i saw him grab 6 or 7 bricks. So, I don't know what his total was.

Comon Guys! Danny just described a scene that we've seen time and time again for at least the past 20+ yrs of going to Gun Shows which I've stopped doping because of the junk most now sell. But suddenly because there is a national shortage of rimfire ammo and you see some dude doing what most have seen several times in the past, that's the reason for the shortage?????? And Danny even says he hasn't a clue whether the guy was buying to use, sell or who knows what. GIVE ME A BREAK MAN! Looks like the sniveling is endless and won't change a damn thing. Starting to sound like somebody didn't get theirs and somebody did. Hence it's really about sour grapes. Ridiculous!

It didn't bother me, since I wasn't there to try to find 22LR ammo. Wife and I went primarilly for something to do, not with any clear cut purpose in mind.
I will say this I didn't see any handgun ammo for sale at any better prices than my local Wal Mart. There were some fair prices on handguns but that was about all that I noticed. I did like the looks of that SCAR 17S but not at three grand.

I have to agree with Butch--quit winning and get with someone that you can rely on and get put on their waiting list---

We shooters have went through this in the past-mid 90's with primers - again have a issue finding components powder , primers and certain projectiles.

I have 66 years in this "Take care of #1 first" world and will never need to worry about ammo till I leave this world not because I am Lucky but because I planned ahead

Good Luck

Jim

In 1949 when I first purchased Remington 22 LR HP ammo it cost 45 cents per box. In 1963 copper was selling for about 22 cents per pound ,now its around $ 3.25 per pound. In 1953 when I purchased a 270 Winchester rifle a box of ammo.. 20 rounds cost less than $ 4.00 per box. In the good old days wages were much lower so when I got a Winchester Mdl 70 270 for $ 127 in 1952 it seamed like a lot of money to me. Over the years prices increased due in part to inflation but wages also increased. Their was a time when I worked less hours to get guns and ammo then now. Some people now must be afraid because firearms sales are at the highest level ever along with ammo for them. The cost of new equipment to make more ammo and labor to run the new equipment 24/7 must be higher than ten years ago. After the hoarders have gotten what they wont I expect ammo prices to be higher than five years ago. Most all of my life I was in small towns and out in the country . The lowest cost for getting reloading supplies and ammo for me was by getting it from mail order companies. As I got older I would get a larger supply than I needed when it was on sale. So I ll not be purchasing any thing at ripoff prices. March 2013 I ordered five boxes of 17 Hornet ammo and two boxes of brass which is still back ordered but I was lucky I got five boxes of ammo Dec 2012 when I decided that I would be getting a 17 Hornet rifle.

If you still do the Hornet thing and need brass, send me a PM. I think I have about 65 pieces that I could send to you for $10. postage.
