.22 ammo shortage/price ripoffs

Well folks,I was visiting a gunsmith in ID for some rifle parts and I bemoaned the .22 ammo prices. He said he had a brick he would sell me for $27........It was even Federal. He said it was freshly received. There was no catch. He said he was selling it for his normal profit. I sprained my wrist trying to get my wallet out of my pants. He said the big dealers were ripping off the world marking it up 4 or 5 times. What tools do we have as buyers to combat this kind of greed and gouging behavior other than boycotting the big sellers? Has anyone else had this experience recently?

yes, every where I look even some of the small gun shops are bad,

it seems to me some folks are buying what ever is available and building huge inventories, they may never shoot in a life time, thus the shortage and pricing.

fear mindset.

I keep reading about hoarders building huge inventories and I am beginning to think it is real. I hope they all go broke. Can't imagine wives being very happy seeing this.

I was out Friday, no one around here had any 22. We have guys that go to wally world every morning and wait for the ammo to be put out, they buy it all up and then re sell it for outrageous prices. I just hope what comes around goes around.

you need to go over to rimfire central some of those guys over there are always bragging how much ammo they have and looking for more. I think one guy over there had at least 35,000 rounds== 70 bricks of ammo That is why there is 22 ammo around.

That's exactly it. I know one of them first hand. He is like a rabid dog. He and his buddies have a network, they hound the stores and when one store has them in they all contact each other and sweep in. Very disappointing. I have never seen or heard of him shooting, he does not belong to any shooting club.

That is nothing new, I have been a member there since 2002, do a search for posts by chiefdave but don't bother sending him a PM. I wouldn't be surprised if I had 7000 rounds of rimfire but the only thing I have been buying lately is 17WSM but I do have 2 guns to feed, a BMag and a H&R Sportster. Most people would cry if I posted pics of the price tags on some of this rimfire ammo that I bought over 10 years ago

there's nothing you can do about pricing other than pay it or not. There are no, and should be no, "tools" to try and tell people what they can charge for their items. You can pay a premium and have the ammo with little work/hassle....or you can show up at gun shops every morning and hope to grab some.

This is a free market economy...and when it's something you don't HAVE to have to survive, there should be NOTHING saying it has to cost this much or that much.

I was at a local gun shop a few days ago and they had a fair amount of 22 ammo. They asked me how much I wanted, and I said 1 box. I paid a sane and normal price for it, then went out and shot it. I hope a hoarder did not get to the rest of it.

I know I have more than 10k rounds and will be adding another 10k at least once i purchase my next batch of match ammo.

I only buy them by the case and leave all the hoarders to themselves to stalk the stores. Whenever I see it in a store I just laugh and walk by.

For all those paying high prices, you might as well just buy the match ammo and enjoy shooting that much more until the price comes back down to normal.

I have 4 small bore shooters in my family and one trip to the range will be at least a brick if not more, I have always had stock on hand, it doesn't mean I am a hoarder, I just simply plan ahead and buy at decent prices.

I can tell you I purchased a case of CCI from midway at the normal $320 price tag and will wait tip December of this year to see if it comes in, or it will be next year who knows, I use this ammo for the plinking and when my kids take their friends out.

I am also. I have plenty of 22LR and I just ordered 2 bricks from Dan Killough earlier this week. Dan's prices are good and since I have about 22 bricks a little wait ain't a problem. I just shoot as I don't have time to piss and moan.

Dan used to be my supplier when I had my other rifle, but I switched when I bought my new Anschutz that liked Federal Ultra Match UM22 better than Tenex and Lester became my supplier and even he is now out of UM22. BTW, The cheapest I've ever paid for a brick of UM22 was like 2+ yrs ago and then it was $149.99 a brick and that was better than most places on the open market. Hell Lapua Midas+ and CenterX were nearly just as expensive.

Shoot some smallbore prone matches each year. That means some decent ammo for practice and high priced stuff for matches.

I just get on a back order list from places like Champion Shooters Supply and Champions Choice for some Wolf Match or Match Extra and buy a case when it comes in. It might take 6 weeks or so for the order to come in. The case will last me a couple of years of practice and matches. It isn't plinking ammo but it's available none the less.

The Midas+ is never a problem to get, problem is purchasing enough of the same lot. Any of the high end match stuff is expensive.

You don't want to pm chiefdave, because he is dead. e passed a few years back. I have 10K rounds of .22lr, but most of it is match and all but 200 is before it was hard to get. It really is cheaper to get Eley sometimes than the Remington Golden bullets.

I was thinking that CD died about 5-7 years ago.

The sad part about the hoarders is the people who have kids that want to shoot. I know a lot of people with families who can't afford what these jerks are asking. It's hard to get a kid involved in our sport if he/she doesn't have any ammo to shoot.
