22 ammo hoarding

The real question is why was not everyone expanding? It is odd that during the 10years of almost no 22lr cci was the most available?

because they knew the craziness of those years would eventually end. when a more normal market ensued they didn't want to be stuck with extra capacity.

Because all of that capacity would be sitting idle right now. Take a look at historical ATK and Vista 10K’s if you want to know what a publicly traded company thought of the “shortages.”

Not a lot of profit in 22LR is what I read. When 22LR was scarce, so were other, higher profit components. More importantly, chasing temporary shortages created by political forces with capital investments is a good way to go bankrupt when it is over. I think manufacturers did what the could with temporary measures such as overtime, but intelligently didn't build a lot of new factories.

However, if they did, we may see prices come back down below the prices before the temporary shortage. This will be good for consumers who want to load up, but bad for the industry overall.

It is these up and down market forces that kill the small companies, and sometimes big companies who make mistakes, resulting in consolidation into 1 or 2 companies without competition to drive innovation, quality, and pricing.

Unfortunately, some 22 ammo doesn't seem to have an indefinite storage period. I recently pulled some Remington 22LR Golden Bullets (Golden Turdetts!) that had been stored in a cool, dry place and the bullets were corroded to the point where they would not feed or cycle most of the time. This stuff was maybe 10 years old. Shame to - as I have several unopened cases of this particular ammo. The higher end 22 ammo with lubricated bullets does not have this problem.

I guess the old saying "use it or lose it" is applicable here. From here on out, I'll try to keep maybe a years supply on hand to get me through times of no decent 22 ammo and try to avoid the really cheap stuff.

But it would be paid off right now and you could be using it to produce specialty ammo. Imagine some US companies that could produce match ammo.

I’m trying to figure out why the subsonic 22 LR ammo costs more than the other stuff.

Oh wait: It’s TACTICAL

Same reason I gave the last guy.

The real question is who are these horders who have somehow bought the entire supply of 22lr for over a decade? Before this stuff started every walmart up here had pallets of 22 then they would only get partial cases?

So who are these few guys who bought literally billions of rounds of ammo over years.

well lets think about it a minute. Gun sales setting records. preppers believing electing Obama was the end of guns in America. He will ban the sale of ammunition.

guy who normally might buy a box or two of .22 ammo a year buys a brick. pretty soon the shelves are not as full. Next guy says hell i better buy 2 bricks. the shelves are looking pretty sparse. Next guy just buys all they have on the shelves at the time. next guy panics and starts to search the stores and when he finds some he buys them out.

if everyone had just bought what they normally did shortages would have never happened but when everyone goes from buying a couple of boxes to buying bricks.....

it was all of us. anyone who bought more than they normally would have. i am guilty. i have an ammo tin of .22's i bought back then. Don't often shoot rimfire. haven't shot any of them. Also have several 1000 round 5.56 ammo boxes bought back then.

or
it is used in suppressed guns
or
it is target..no trans sonic behavior.

I wasn’t really referring to target ammo. Check out the 22 LR offerings that are simply sold as subsonic. Not match grade. Just less powder but it costs more.

lets talk about real life.
i worked gun shows for the last 12 years.
at a show, the word gets around that a guy just paid $90 for a brick of 22's ( on the net).
next thing you know, sellers are pulling 22 ammo off the tables to sell online, what little stays goes very high.
it went down hill from there.
( the FACTS were it was lapua target ammo, and actually a good price, but that did not stop the rumor mills)

essentially the same with primers before that. in colorado a guy at the show gets a call from partner at the tulsa show..."primers are selling at $200 a case" (they had been 90-120). exact same thing, primers come off the tables..lets wait and see how high they go.

Frigging tards and their .22 hoarding was possibly one of the stupidest periods in sports shooting history.

"Oh look, I have 200,000 rounds of 22lr, in case we get attacked by alien zombie squirrels!!!!"

TARDS.
You have never had to face a herd of zombie squirrels obviously. Headshots are the only way to go with those things. Saw that on the infonet, so it must be true right?

Guess I became an "accidental" hoarder a bit before the shortage hit. After shooting centerfires for years, I had forgotten how much fun the old .22 could still be. A friend gave me a stripped 1911 frame he got in a big box of trade stuff. Some gun wizard had ground the feed ramp to the point of being useless. A couple years went by and then I ran across an article about Ciener .22 conversions for 1911s that mentioned the feed ramp is part of the barrel. Once I picked one up and dug all the parts needed to put the frame back into service out of my stash, I had a ball!
Even though I still had my trusty Remington 510 "Target Master", a Savage 87D, a Ruger Single Six, Colt Frontier Scout and a Browning target pistol, I "needed" an adult-sized bolt gun...so I bought a Browning T-bolt with a heavy barrel and was further hooked on the old .22LR.
Since all my firearms shoot the Federal Champions and Remington bulk loads great for my purposes, I made it a habit to pick up one or two "bricks" whenever old Walmart had specials...even if I didn't need them. By the time the "shortage" hit I had enough to probably survive 10 years pretty easily.
So there you have it. I caused the shortage single handedly. My apologies , but it feels so good to have that weight of that guilt off my shoulders.
