22-6mm Rem

Has anyone in cyberland heard of this setup? I understand you start with a 6mm Rem case and neck it down to .224. I heard you can shoot heavy .224s out to 1000 yds. Sounds interesting. Any input will be greatly appreciated. I am new to what will be a custom gun and long range shooting. Thanks. Pete

Bullet Maker -

Howdy !

An initial brief response.....

Yeh... .224 - 6mm is otherwise known as "Texas Trophy Hunter".

IMHO - It would be / is "over-bore" capacity, for .224" calibre bullets under 75gr wt.
Best use would come via loads utilizing heavier/heaviest .224" cal bullets.

For a dual-role' rifle ( deer/varmints, varmints/paper; et al ), the varmint and any close-range bench rest work would argue for use of more modest weight .224" cal bullets.

Please refer to PMs, later today.

I had something similar a few years ago, but took it one step further. It was a 22-6mm ackley. it was smokin fast with light bullets. I was shooting the 60hp sierra bullets at 4200fps. and no the barrel didn't really last that long. nor did the primer pockets. it was dead flat shooting thou. wouldn't recommend it on turkeys, very bad decision, trust me. anything you don't plan on eating no worries. it'll blow the dust off the fur when it hits it. shot a g-hog at 450yds once, it's cool seeing a dust ball fly off a hog that distance.

I wouldn't recommend it. It will break your heart. I had one that shot .400 to .600 at 300 yards for only 300 or 400 rounds then started opening up fast. I would only recommend it for somebody who would use it to shoot five or ten shots a day. Then you might be able to justify the quick death of a fine barrel.

I considered building a 22-6MM and also a 22-6MMAI, but after studying various articles and owning more than a few .220 Swifts IMHO its really hard to beat a standard .220 Swift. I can drive a 55 grain BT in my custom 28 inch barreled Swift at an easy 4100 fps. Over bore is great and always will be, but you sometimes reach a point of no returns.

My latest Hornady manual has load info for it. Lonnie Hummel (sp?) was the champion of the 22-6mm. I think I read he recently retired from Hornady. He was a great resource and a nice guy to talk to the phone. I built a fast twist 22-250 AI instead of the 22-6mm. Now that Laupa brass is available for the 22-250, I have absolutely no regrets.

Luck in your choice, Tim
