.22-.284

Now that's gotta be a barrel burner. How many rounds before the barrel goes south. What kind of speeds can you get using the 80 grain amax?

I prefer to call them "limited life" barrels. ;D

Dropped off my action, barrel and reamers at Bob Green's today. What a great guy! We talked for almost an hour. He gave me some new ideas on dies but am having trouble coming up with a standard .22 caliber with a 35 degree shoulder. Anybody?
He quoted 8 weeks and I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas! ;D

Wouldn't a Redding Type S FL sizer in 6.5/284 work, with the proper dia. neck bushing?

No it leaves a humph at the neck/shoulder junction. I would like a sharp transition as i need to turn the necks prior to firing. I guess the other option is to size at 6.5, then turn, then neck down. I have a resizer reamer made and just trying to get a jump on the case work.

You could try flipping the bushing to # side UP to see if it would size further down the neck?

Or, machine the face of the bushing down to remove the slight chamfer on the # side?

Or, just neck 'em down as usual and turn into the shoulder a bit to remove part of the "hump"?
That's what I do when making 6.5SAUM brass, and once they're fired, the shoulders are nice & crispy...

Really looking forward to seeing what this thing does. I was thinking of a 6mm mach 4 but now maybe this?

I treat barrels are like race car tires.

And Women? ;D

Hit it and quit it buddy!

As for the barrel life, you bought a reamer so you must be prepared to use it. I have a 22 Cheetah Mk1 that is built on a Cooper 22 and it is awesome. I went for a 27" 1-15 Pacnor. It shoots super small with Remington Benchrest 52 gr bullets 10 thou off the lands. Lapua Palma brass, Rem 7 ½ primers and 47.5 gr IMR 4007. It chronos about 4200 FPS and the brass lasts.

Prior to 1966, P.O. Ackley, Fred Huntington, and Robert Forker all experimented with this cartridge. Ackley mentioned that the cartridge produced about the same velocities as the .220 Swift, except being overbore capacity, it requires more powder for any given weight of bullet. They experimented mostly with with 4350 and 3031.
Forker got some incredible velocities with very light bullets and slower twist barrels. Well over 5000fps in some cases and over 6500 in one case. There is no mention of accuracy.
When your current barrel wears out you may want to experiment with a slower twist if you want to achieve these velocities. I think "ballpowder" above is on the right track. It will be interesting to see what this case does with the 80g and heavier bullets.JMO, dedogs

I'm wondering if a 35g solid and a case full of LT-32 would get you into warp factor 8 territory.

Bob, i started with H1000 and couldn't get a case full without pressure signs. Switched to Retumbo and same thing however did see 3750 fps w/80 gr. A-Max but ejector smileys! Just got a jug of RL33 and bingo! 60 grains with the 80 gr. A-max hovers around 1/2 MOA at 200 yards and gives me 3609 fps avg. with the Magneto Speed and low SD's. Haven't been able to stretch it out yet with that four-letter word, WORK, getting in the way! I will update when I get out.

Good to hear its working out. I had very good luck with 53 grains of H1000 and 75grain A-Max @ 3500fps, bug holes at 100yrds and 1/2" groups at 200yrds. also RL22 seemed to work well too.

284 winchester cases necked down to .224 and turned necks to .010" thick. I found mag primers mad all the difference in my loads.

Look for North of 3700 with the 80.5 Berger's. I can easily get 3650 with my .22-6mm but I have a 30" Krieger barrel. Best combination of accuracy/velocity is obtained with NMRP in my rifle.
Shoot slowly and don't overheat the barrel.
Bill

I have a lot of reloading data on the 22-284, along with several articles with range work ups. Have been collecting data for some time now.
