22-250AI FL Die

I had a strange thing happen. After a few loads, the cases started growing to the point where I had to FLS.
I bought the rifle second hand with a NS die and seater. So I bought a Lee FLS die. Adjusting it in to touch the shell holder, the die did not even touch the shoulder. I had to physically grind away .010" from the bottom, to actually get the die to touch the shoulder. Is this a normal practice??
I have never found or heard of this before.
Any comments plse

shell holders make a big difference - could be the Lee was .010 thinner
on top than what type you were using?

I take .010 off the bottom of my dies to be able to size the case exactly to fit my chamber. My gunsmith uses min. spec. reamers and a regular die just won't go down far enough. Take a skim cut off the bottom of the die, preferably, with a lathe. Use the Redding Competition shell holders along with die shims and you can size your brass exactly. This is a common problem I've found with min. spec. chambers.

I actually had a Redding Shell holder in, and changed it to a Lee that I had available, no difference.
Crush fit..no idea. Interesting point though.

Maybe the barrel was short chambered to make sure of a crush fit when fireforming???

A properly chambered Ackley has a .004 crush fit on virgin parent cartridge brass. The crush is where the neck shoulder junction of the parent brass hits the neck shoulder junction of the chamber. After the brass is fireformed the brass shoulder reforms to the 40 degree Ackley shoulder angle and it is no longer a crush fit. If a gunsmith doesn't set your Ackley chamber to this .004 crush fit, find one who does.
