22-250ai, 1-8 twist and 75-80gr bullet....what powder?

Putting together a savage with a shilen prefit 26" 22-250ai 1-8 twist. Plan on using win brass and cci br2 and 75 or80 gr berger vld. I have a bunch of h4831sc and h4350. Hopefully i can get 3300 fps accurately as that would out do,slightly, my 243 lasers. What starting loads for the ai? i have a large amount of 69 smk and varget that i could use to fire form with, only plan on forming 50 cases at a time. Not needing 1000 pieces of formed brass for pd.'s or anything. Seat bullets long to hold casehead against boltface with a slightly reduced 22-250 load for fireform. Not really looking for a super accurate fire form load. Basically just break in and sight in for the fireform.

If your Ackley is chambered correctly there will be resistance felt through the bolt handle as it is closed on a .22-250 round. Headspace on the ackleys is shorter than the parent case (the new .280 Ackley/Nosler is something else). There should be no need to 'jam' the bullet when fire forming as the base is already pressed against the bolt face and can not move forward because the neck/shoulder junction is, also, 'jammed' by the chamber. I wouldn't short change my accuracy expectations while fire forming, mine has always been accurate enough for prairie dogs and other vermin. When cutting an Ackley chamber (except the new .280 Ackley/Nosler) the "GO" gauge, for the parent cartridge, becomes the "NO-GO gauge.

H-4350 is the place to start using upper 22-250 loads.

I can't recommend my loads as I shoot moly plated bullets.

I worked around the 75's for longer range work, and the accuracy with the VLD's are at 3425 in a 23" tube.

Thank u sir. Never messed with anything other then straight forward reloading. I plan to fireform just 50 rds at first, then start load development with the 80 vld. I never need more then 50 rds at a time and hate to waste barrel life forming500 pieces of brass so that i can load each case 2 more times and then rebarrel. Is 1500 rds of sub 3/4moa barrel life with attention paid to minimizing long strings of fire/barrel heat, realistic ? How is brass life/primer pocket with that load Alf?

I have a couple of 22-250AI's with 8 twist barrels and either h-4350 or h-4831sc work very well in both with a slight edge in accuracy shown with the 4831 in my guns, when working up loads for the 75 & 80gr Amax I started with a max load for the the 22-250 and worked up from there I also used my fire form loads for shooting groundhogs which is what I built the rifles for.
The fire form form loads were extremely accurate

H4350 proved to be the most accurate powder in my 22-250 AI. Start at around 38.3 grains in the Improved case and go up carefully. Worked good with both 75 A-Max and 80 SMK's

I don't shoot the 22-250AI, but use the same case necked upto 6mm. With heavy bullets I've had great results with (believe it or not) H1000 and Retumbo. 4831sc also seems to be pretty good too.

My 22-250AI's hammer with H1000. Best accuracy is normally around 3300fps with 75 and 80 grain bullets.

H1000 and 75 grain Amaxes shot well enough to get third place in the Jamboree a few years back (limited open). My rifle, ammo, and spotter get the credit.

Howdy !

My .22-35 Rem wildcat has case capacity just short of .220 Swift.

In a 28" K & P SS 5-groove 1-8, best acccuracy load was:
40.5gr AA3100 FED LR Match under Hornady 75 "A"-Max for 3,420 fps.

Substitute of primer in load to FED LR Magnum Match gave 3,500fps honest, with a slight opening of groups.

Enough KE for a clean-kill on a groundhog size varmint @ 1,000......IMHO.

I have a Cooper m22 in 22-250 AI with a 26" 8 twist - I push the 75 Amax with RL 19 with excellent accuracy and velocity.

Rem 700sa,keiger 1-9 ss at 26 in,ww primers and ww cases. Tried R19 and got good accuaccy but only 3300 fps. Then tried imr 4350 (40.5 gr) very accuratte and now 3500 fps. Then when they brought out the R17 and said it was basically a progressive burning 4350 I tried it. Wow now 3750 fps and basically one hole at 100 yds. I thought ok maybe I`m a little on the hot side so I took a new ww case ,firformed it and then kept loading it until the primer pocket just started to feel less seating resistance. That happened at 15 reloads. So I don`t think in MY gun its to hot.

I have been running both the vld and the amax in 75 and 80 grain for a few years now. I have been using RL 19 at 41 -42 grain and getting 3300/80 and 3400/75 grain bullet. I have also been having some very good luck with the 80.5 bergers using 42 grains of RL22. I am shooting a Remington 788 with a 26" barrel
The loads I listed work in my 22-250 A.I but may not work in other guns , start low and work up.
