22-250

I just picked up a Remington 700 with a heavy varmint barrel. I am told it was made around 1970. Would any one know the twist on this barrel and what would be a good load for this gun?

it is more than likely a 1-14 twist. all the remingtons i know of are. try the 55-60 bullets with 34-35 grains of imr 4895 or imr 4064. max load with the imr 4064 with 55 grain bullets is 35.7 in sierra manual. i was recommended a load of 34.6 grains of imr 4895 with a sierra 55 hpbt, it has worked well in many of the 22-250's i have owned. hard to beat. good luck.

I agree with Frye, my 22-250 Reminton 700 varmint really likes 50 gr ballistic Tips with 34.8 IMR 4895 w/ CCI Primers. Likes to cartwheel things. H380 is also real good, but tends to burn a little dirty in my gun. Maybe a primer change would help. Good Luck

I also have one. It was made around 74-76 I can not remember right now.

It should be a 1-14" twist. My rifle DOES NOT like ANY boattail type of bullet, doesn't matter who makes it. I have tried them all. It really likes the Sierra 55gr. SMP Varminter, product # 1350). It will also shoot the Sierra 55gr. SPT Varminter, product # 1360) just about the same.

Here is my load;
Powder; 38grs of H380
COAL; 2.415
Primers; CCI BR-2
Case; Remington

It will shoot 1/2" to 3/4" almost anyday, without wind)

Try 38 grs. Varget with a CCI BR2 primer and Berger 52 gr HP.

Extremely accurate and is an excellent bullet for all varmints.

I'm just starting to re-load for .22-250 so I tried 38grns,slightly under the lowest load) H-4350 with a 52grn SMK OAL 2.350" CCI BR2 primer. These groups are not outsanding but I was pretty happy regardless as it was my 1st attempt with this caliber and rifle. The upper right target was at 200yds and in my own defence I was freezing at this point as it was about -15° at the range.;) The flyers are from sighting in the scope.

For p-dogs I use 50gr. moly coated V-Max's with 37.9gr Varget,.025" off the lands.Great load out to 600 yards,so far).Its a tad warm so work-up to it.

For punching paper 55gr.Bergers with 35.3gr.of Varget .010" off the lands will produce five shot groups in the mid to high 3's at 100 yards.

Both loads useing CCI BR-2.

Not tryin to steal op's thread here but found a good M70 .22-250 and need to now if anyone can tell me Lapua NK> wall measurement

I have loaded 22-250 a considerable amount and tried a multitude of powers as well as bullets. My best loads for accuracy and speed was Winchester 760 and IMR 4064 with a 52 g Sierra HPBT Match bullet in a Remington 40X-BR. I have had good success with Sierra 55g match and soft point. I will not say this is the most accurate load as usually with all calibers - a faster powder and lower pressures/velocities will usually produce more accurate 100 yd groups. In my case I shot long range varmints (ground hogs and coyotes to 400 plus yds, where bullet drop/velocity was a big factor of success, so, velocity and accuracy were both important. I was grouping 1/2" MOA on an average day. You really do not have to use varmint specific bullets with thin jackets as Match grade bullets have much thicker copper jacket and will still kill any varmint with ease. You have to hit them first and thats where match bullets perform in terms of accuracy. Lighter cartridges like 22 Hornet, 222 Rem categories may benefit with lighter bullets, 40-50 g and thinner jackets primarily to increase velocity/reduce bullet drop and have more destructive impact on the animal.
