22-250 vs 22 Creedmoor

I have both calibers. The 22-250 is a Savage LRPV with a 1:9 twist. The 22 Creedmoor is built on a Remington 700 action with a Proof Research barrel and has a 1:7.5 twist. I shoot up to 70 gr. bullets in the Savage and 80-85 gr. in the 22CM. I’m thinking of only keeping one and doing a re-barrel on the other. In equal weight bullets the speed difference is only about 100-150 fps with safe pressure loads. I shoot mainly paper and some steel and my range goes out to 300 yds. I shoot both as a single shot. Both are very accurate and I know or have heard about barrel life in the 22CM. So, which one would you keep and why?

If I were you I'd keep the Savage. Then, I'd be me again and see how cheap I could get that Remington...

In all honesty, if 300 yds is your max I'd sell both and get something with much less case capacity like a 223 or 222 and shoot it for thousands and thousands of rounds.

But, if the choice is only between the two you have I'd keep the semi custom 22CM on the Rem 700. It can argued the case design is maybe a little better with the Creedmoor over the 22-250 but doubtful you'd ever notice a difference out to 300yds and I'm no particular fan of Savage CF rifles and I am a big Rem 700 fan so like I said, if it were me, I'd keep the semi custom Rem 700 22CM.

It's hard to go wrong with a 22-250 for a number of reasons. You could always have it re-barreled with a faster twist rate and longer throat in the chamber to take advantage of the heavier .224" bullets, if you wish, then chamber the .22 CM into something else entirely. Given that it is not difficult to push 90 VLDs out of a straight .223 Rem with a 30" barrel to around 2840-2850 fps, the 22-250 will not be too short on boiler room should you decide to set it up for heavier bullets. Further, it is generally possible [within reason] to still shoot slightly lighter/shorter bullets once you have installed a faster twist rate barrel. The reverse is not always true (i.e. under-spinning long/heavy bullets usually doesn't work well, if at all. Slightly over-spinning lighter bullets usually works just fine).

I have a very accurate ( Deadly on Sage Rats to, 250ish ) .22-250 Rem ( won't sell it, But might go, Ackley, some Day as, I HATE, Trimming ! ) and I recently put together, a 6 XC, 24" 1-7.5 Twist, Criterion barreled, "RemAge" set up on, a New SS, Rem 700, action.
LOW Recoil ( a Braked, Long Range, Varmint / Steel plate/ Target, Fun Gun ). Used, Norma Cases and Forster Dies for, 80, 95 and 108 grain, Bullets that are, "Bug Holing" in the 3's without, hardly ANY "Tuning",.. as yet !
H-S Precision Bedded, stock, 9.5 Pounds, LOW Recoil, Barrel should last, a long Time,.. Love, the 6 XC !
Since you have "close, duplicates", I'd use the .22 Creed's Action and make, a sweet, 6 XC out of it !

I like 22-250's, I'm not one of the cool kids though, my deer rifle is a 260 Remington lol. With the exception of the stock my old 22-250 is a all factory Savage mdl 12 FVSS, 1-12 twist 26" heavy barrel. I've killed groundhogs out to 470 yards with it. At almost 12lbs it to heavy to pack around much.

I just finished working up a good load for my new 22-250 build. A LH Savage mdl 11 with a 1-12 twist 24" Shilen Select SS Match barrel. It shoots great and at 9lb 6oz I'll use it for groundhogs and coyotes.

Huge fan of the 22-250, that being said:

Keep the Remington, sell the Savage, buy or build a .222 or .223 for the bullet and twist you need specifically for 300 yards if that's where the majority of your shooting will be. YMMV

I have both reamers and offer the Savage prefit in 1-8.
