22 - 250 rem .....

What is your favorite load ?? I use 35 grains of IMR4064 standard CCI Lg rifle primer & 55 gr V-Max...it is good but I'm looking to find the best for my new barrel..it has a one in twelve twist I'm hoping to use the 60 gr V-Max if I can get some good accuracy at long range & still hit hard...mike in ct

My best load for the 22-250 was 36 grs of IMR 4064
and 52 grs sierra hpbt. bullet worked well.

My .223 VSSF has 1-12 and I can't get the 60g to shoot at all, I drove it to the 3200fps range, best I can get is about 1/2 MOA but not consistantly. However, it shoots very well in my AR that has the 1-10 barrel.

I full lenght resize. I use 38.5grs 4064 or 39.5 varget under a 40gr Vmax at 2.4 COL.

Both loads shoot the same hole or so close I can not see a difference. Both loads mixed, 5 of each, will shoot a 10rd 1" hole.

Rem 700 VLS, factory barrel but some other tweaks done. Scope is 8.5X25X50 mounted TIGHT to the barrel.

It shoots 1.4 or so inches high 100 zeroed at 250. 4110 FPS.

I now really like this load. Generally a hit center chest or back will not have a exit hole and the tail never twitches when they go down and they hit the ground hard. A head or neck hit usually means nothing left above shoulders.

your 55 grain bullets don't like more than about 200,00 RPM. that's only about 3300 FPS,198,00 actually) in a 12 twist barrel. Actually, 155,000 is the lowest desirable RPM.

I realize your 22-250 is capable of a lot more velocity than that, but if accuracy is your aim, you might want to consider a heavier bullet which will like to stabilize at higher RPM.

If destruction of a critter is desired, try the Hornady SX for lower velocity fun.

Of course My PD round is 40 grains at 3800 in a 12 twist, and it works for me.

Halfmile How do you come up with the formula for those calculations? Once you have the data how do you apply it to a bullet to determine a quality rpm?

My curosity is cranked tight now. 1 in 9 twist vs 1 in 14 and all the stuff inbetween...

The formula for RPM is,dammit I don't know how to do fractions):

Muzzle velocity X 720 over,divided by) the twist rate of the rifle = RPM

I want Sierra and others to give reccomended RPM so accuracy is a little easier to obtain instead of all the cut and try. They know what works but don't have the info readily available.

Of course harmonics and all the other parameters affect things but it seems to me,old bike tuner) that RPM goal is a nice thing to have.

your formula works fine, but figuring inches per revolution in a 13 twist rifle would be a pain.

"The important thing for accuracy is each rifle and pistol bullet needs to be spun in a narrow RPM range to be accurate. Once this RPM range is identified and the basic formula
modified to give rifling twist rate for the muzzle velocity the bullet will be fired at, getting best accuracy is easy."

I have to give credit to Bart Bobbitt for that quote, it seems to simplify matters.

The old saying "you can't spin them too fast", I believe to be untrue. After destroying a dozen Hornady SX in the dog field, I had to put the rounds in the soda cooler to make them work again. They had been fine back home in cooler weather.

THere is a question of course, and that would be how much accuracy you sacrifice in order to gain destructive potential. Here is where individual rifle characteristics,drives me nuts) come into play. I have a 10 twist custom 700 that cheerfully shoots 3800FPS 40 grain varmint bullets .5 to .8 inches at 100 yds all day long. This gives me the destructive potential I love while retaining a very good cone of accuracy. My XR-100 is a little more fussy.

Haven't vaporized any more bullets but also haven't been shooting PDs in excessive heat.

I still hope to find spin rate info someplace, just sent an inquiry to Sierra.

Yep, right. I looked at your formula too quick. Actually it's the same one. Your 60x 12 is my 720 and your x1/twist is the same as making it the denominator.,is that correct?)

There. looks better. My computer skills need more refining. I did get an email back from Sierra saying they did not have any preferred spin rates for their bullets.

In short, he said RPM was not a criteria when designing bullets. I think you could include RPM when using the same bullet in a different twist rifle, for example, and possibly get the load developed a little quicker.

I feel that this could be an effective tool if the data could be attained somehow.

I am not an expert by any means, just a varmint shooter with a lot of curiosity. I guess my desire here is for a method to arrive more quickly at optimum accuracy for a given bullet.

Your SX experience bears out my point. The fast twist gave them more RPM than they could handle even though they were under the suggested speed limit.,ask me why I had to put mine in the Soda cooler to avoid whiteline probs.)

A buddy of mine just got ahold of a factory Savage Striker 22-250 that SHOOTS! .75 MOA and better with anything he puts down it. Had a bunch of 60 JLK LD's,BC 339) that go into the 4's @ around 3200 fps. After i saw this we put a Burris 6-24X Signature on top, and we're going for some LR pr. dogs real soon.

Mike, I shot 60g Sierra's with extreme accuracy with 34.0g of IMR 4350.

I do believe that you will get unreal velocity and accuracy with the 55's. I am shooting 41.5g of 760 with a 55g NOs/Win bullet at 3850 fps shooting very tiny groups, and at 400 I rarely miss a 2 3/4" clay pigeon.

I was shooting a 1-14 twist. My barrel also likes the old 60g
Nosler Solid base bullet. Both bullets shot in the 3's in my custom barrel.

The Sierra 60g HP and the old Nosler 60g sp will stabalize in a 14 twist, the Hornady 60g V Max will not stabalize in a 14 twist.

52A-Max 34.9 RL15 CCI MAG aprox 3600fps Amazing accuracy,Sierra's accuracy load for 52gr MK)I just rebarreled my burnt out .243 with a new take off barrel I had left over from another project, it wasn't shooting well so I tried the Tubb final finish system,fire lapping with impregnated 80 gr bullets)like magic I was shooting groups nearly as consistant as my custom Dasher/6BR at 100yds and at 240yds could hit golf balls consistantly. Silk purse from a sows ear comes to mind. I got some 55gr Noslers, Hornadys and Sierra blitzkings i'm going to try next. E-mail me and request to be added to my address book and I'll keep you posted on my findings if you are interested.

I see IMR 4064, R15 & of course H380 used & talked about on varminting. Ball, single & double base extruded powders.

Has anyone used H322 or Benchrest with any results?

Favorite powders? I am just fishing here...

I like the extruded because it's easier cleaning but harder to measure.

I like the ball because it's very easy to measure/consistant but fairly dirty.

All pretty much say that thery are not temp sensitive but are't they?

I'm shooting the 22.250, at least for awhile, till the barrel goes. Next summer?

sorry i've been really busy with work...I'm trying to find the time to get one more outing with that cranky new barrel...I put the thing in a diff stock & caused some new headaches..So It may be a while before I post up any groups/pics/info about this project rifle...I keep hearing good things about reloader series of powders...The last outing I used H-380 & the 60 gr bullet...Started tumbling the bullets in Tungsten Disulfide..Pretty cool stuff...I liked the way the barrels cleaned up..No one hole groups to report [YET] ...I just wanted you guys to know I'm still alive & trying...mike

I've had excellent results in my .22-250 A.I. using 43.7 grn. of H-380 pushing a 50 grn. Nosler Ballistic Tip at 4,150 ft/s. This is out of a Hart 1-14" .250 neck dia. light varmint barrel. The load is deadly accurate and quite a crow tamer. I used to use it on cagey groundhogs until I started to use a .243 A.I. on them. I've got a new 1-12" barrel for the .22-250 that I will use with heavier bullets but haven't screwed it on yet. By the way, my total hog count this year was only 25 confirmed, I usually get 50 easy. I'm going to let some fields recover for 2007 because I fear I have overhunted them.

My rifle's favorite load works out to 33.6grains IMR4895 behind 50 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip with CCI primer. Death on our Arctic Ground squirrels & Marmots. Berger 52 grains are a little more accurate. But I Have alot of the 50 gr Ballistics. Had good luck with Win 748 but it seems to dirty the barrel a little more than the IMR 4895.
