22-250 Re-barrel

I remember real well the last shot I made with my 9 twist .22-.250 loaded with 53 Vmax's & IMR 8208. The barrel had been used for 4 years & had about 3000 rounds thru it. It was also used with 68 grain Hornady HPBT's and 69 grain Barnes match burners. All sorts of powders - IMR 8208, H414, H380, RS Big Game, & H4350. This big reddish colored PD appeared about 275 yards out & I held right at the top of its head and SPLAT. I had second thoughts about the re-barrel job but went ahead and had it done.

I longish throated chamber & 14 twist sounds like a dilemma.

i planned on going to a 22-250 AI with a 1/7.5 or 8 after my barrel is toast... i am not greatly concerned about barrel life but maybe still it would be better going to a 6mm... always wanted a 6xc..

It'll shoot the 80 A-Maxes, as well as other 80's and 80.5 bullets with an 8 twist, but the 77 TMK is even better. Mine was a 28 inch X-Caliber and the only reason I got rid of it was to start a 6BR, which by the way, will shoot quite well past 600 yds for P-dogs and such. 25% less powder too.

I have a very long free bore in this barrel.

That was the gripe I had with my VSF also. Got to a point at appx 1700 rounds that I couldn't maintain the .010-.020 off the lands and keep enough bullet in the case to make things work. I don't know why they would choose to put a long freebore in a barrel with a 14 twist.

I have a Shilen 8 twist for a 22-250 and it shoots 80g Berger VLDs very
well, but it’s a 28” barrel and I’m shootin at 8000’.

Just as it came to me. I put a MagPul stock and Jewel trigger on it.

You have a junk barrel from factory. 14 twist and 52gr bergers are bucking phenomenal. Killed everything with that combo for years.

You guys might be on to something. I always thought it was a Sendero but after going to Remington site. I find it is an SF model. I will check the box tomorrow. I bought the thing new, so I should know what it is. My bad.

Doesn't make any difference, it still won't shoot.

Wasn't; been down that road before here. Looks like a VSSF, but why get rid of the perfectly good HS Precision stock those came with if it is/was?
Frankly, half-inch groups as the OP stated out of a factory barrel should be more than acceptable. When groups open up on that .22-250, an aftermarket barrel in a 1:12" twist rate should stabilize the high-BC 53 grain Hornady V-Max. If those wouldn't happen to be accurate, at least one would have a shiny new "match-grade" barrel that certainly should do quite well with some of the "regular" 55 gr. or lighter bullets. Myself, if need heavier bullets than that, I just bring out a 6 mm.

Well, I tried everything in that gun and couldn’t get it to shoot under an inch at 100. Every once in a while I pull it out and try again. It’s a lesson in frustration.
How about we trade guns for a while. Maybe a fresh set of eyes on them will make some magic happen.

I tell you what. Years ago, I bought a Browning x bolt Varmint special in 223. It had a neat stock and I didn’t own a Browning , so I figured I’d give it a try. Well, I tried everything in that gun and couldn’t get it to shoot under an inch at 100. Every once in a while I pull it out and try again. It’s a lesson in frustration.
How about we trade guns for a while. Maybe a fresh set of eyes on them will make some magic happen.

You know that 1/2 moa is usually very acceptable from a factory barrel. But not for me. That 1/2 is the best it will do and most times I can't get that. I hate to give up on a caliber, especially one that everyone raves about it's accuracy. I know that the .223 I just built is an altogether different animal but that's what I like to see when I go to the range.

So where do I go from here. New barrel with different twist or new barrel of different caliber? Might have to try both.

It only adds to my frustration level that the ranges are closed.

Nick: Something just popped in my memory. I read Rattigan’s book. If I remember it right, he mentioned that the 22ppc was the most accurate round he ever shot. Maybe do some research on it.
That said, I know what it’s like to “want” a certain round in my stable. Life is too short. Get what you really want and grab the brass ring!
I know what you’re going thru. When I started down this rabbit hole, 1 inch at 100 was pretty good! Then it was 1/2 inch. Now I’m not satisfied unless it’s 1/4 inch!
Then you start shooting at longer ranges and the game starts all over!
With the ranges closed, it’s time to build! Make a decision and call Bob!!

In my opinion and in my experience 1/2 inch from a factory barrel ain't bad. A few will shoot better but many won't. You might improve things if you cut part of the threaded end off and rechambered it using a shorter throat. But thats a gamble and that cost could be used towards a custom barrel. You can get a Krieger in that same contour with the same flutes.

All of my custom barrels shoot under 1/2 in. Many of them shoot most loads so well that its hard to pick a pet load! I guess thats not a bad problem to have?

Nick you might consider a 22BR or 22 Dasher with an 8 twist. I have a 22 BRX with an 8 twist shooting 75g elds. Great accuracy velocity is in the 3300 + range. Less powder and better barrel life. Than a 22/250.
