22-250 Powder for 55 gr bullets

Well I think this thread goes to show how versatile the 22-250 is. Sounds like you can shoot nearly anything you want to.

I recently came into ownership of 10 lbs of varget so that is what I will be using. I got a box of 55 blitzking at a very good price so I started with them. After initial powder charge testing I found that my gun was starting to show pressure signs at 37 gr and was only at 3690 fps here. Best accuracy and least vertical was between 34 and 35 gr but these only get me between 3400-3515 fps. Do these velo's seem a little on the slow side or is it just me?

Edit: my gun only has a 22" barrel so I'm sure that is where some of my lack of velocity is coming from but the number still seem a little low to me

I'm going to proceed with some seating depth testing at 34.7 gr which should put me right at 3500 fps. I will most likely get the 53 vmax after these 100 blitzking are gone so I can achieve velo closer to where I want to be and it even has a higher BC than the blitzking

I never had good results with Varget in my 22-250

the best for me in order of great down

H414 - my best no questions not temp sensitive, 9 1/2 primers and 55 bks 3725 very very accurate

4064 next,

h 4895 next

I don't have a chronograph so I have no idea how fast my Varget load is, I do know that it's accurate. Last friday I killed three ground hogs, 405, 415 and 440 yards. The load is Sierra 55gr Gamekings over 36.0 gr of Varget witn CCI 200 primers. My rifle is a Savage mdl 12, 1-12 twist 26" barrel.

I do have some 4064 test loads that I need to shoot.

It shows a lot of promise as far as accuracy but I just wanted a little more speed than I am getting. But I know my velo will be lacking due to 22" barrel

It doesn't matter if it's 3,400 or 3,700fps if it's accurate the ground hog won't know the difference! I have killed 17 this year and not one has complained yet! It's just a few more clicks on the turett.

Go and have fun!!!

You have a point. But I would just like the extra KE if I can attain it since I am shooting yotes and not ground hogs or p dogs.

Not much difference when all the difference is a few hundred FPS. Now change that to a heavy VLD and your KE goes up!

I became a beleiver this weekend. I was shooting steel with a 308/168 combo. I use a 7mmRM with 150 NBT for my long range hunting. My partner sat down next to me with his 6.5 SAUM and 140 JLK's. I hit the plate and it wobbled. He hit the plate and it jumped all the way up and around, swung down and twisted round. KE is a punction of weight and velocity at the other end. Getting there flat is a function of the bullet design.

Agreed. That is why I'm building a 6.5x47 lapua currently.

Try CFE223. I can drive 55gr Varmint Nightmares to 3989 from my 27" Schnieder poly rifled, 9 twist barreled AR10. Best accuracy happened closer to 3800 though. Look at the load data, this powder seems Taylor made for the .22-250.

Why bother shooting a 22-250 at .223 velocity?

My thoughts exactly

+22
the 3700fps sierra bk has 481fp at 500yds

the 3400fps Sierra bk has 390fp at 500ysd

I will take 481fp any time over 390, 23% more horse power!~!`1

I shot this yesterday, through it's shoulders at 420 yards. I wont hesitate to shoot a dog at the same range.

I bought a Winchester 70 heavy varmint and from the start it would shoot in the .3-.4 with Winchester supreme ammo. One day I decided it was time to see if I could improve it's performance by hand loading. Worked up a load of 36.0gr of imr 4895 with 50gr hornady vmax and it shot this load into one big hole .1-.2 groups all day long and stepped over the chrony at 3800fps. This load is deadly on anything you want to shoot with it,I consider it too light and fragile for deer but coyotes, chucks and thousands of prairie dogs have fallen to this load! Sadly the accuracy has started to open up so considering getting it rebarreled, then it's back to the drawing board!
My groundhog hunting buddy in NY said this rifle was haunted, everything I point it at dies!

P.S. I started using federal match large rifle primers and noticed a marked improvement in accuracy!
